when i went to look at what condition the spark plug wire on my newly purchased '90 legacy project were like i noticed that there weren't any.
instead i found as im sure you all know, there was one coil on each spark plug mount.

can someone tell me why they did this and is it better to upgrade to a more modern "coil pack" with 8mm cable or is this somewhat odd approach going to work just fine ?

Considering many newer cars (like the USDM WRXs) use the coil on plug method, I'd think that it is a better design than the coil/plug wire setup. At the very least, you don't have to worry about plug wires that wear out every few years.

thats a good point id assume that with the coil set up like mine there is less wasted current because the distanse between coil and plug is so small.

Where are you? Either you're not in the US (did the overseas cars have coil on plug back then?) or that's a transplanted engine.

im betting motor swap. even my moms 97L has a coil pack

im in new zealand actually and yes the car did have a motor swap but it should just been swapped for another 91 ej20 engine.

i really want to get to the bottom of this one.

i dont know why they did it only that they did, if you could take a pic of the motor it would help detrmine what motor or at least around what year the motor came from. things like intercooler, coolant fill tank, intake manifold and coolant lines for the turbo will help identification

well first off it's N/A so maybe that it part of the confusion everything on it looks early nineties exept for the coil set up
