Crank Bearing with Sealant??

I am in the process of rebuilding an EJ22. I noticed during diassembly that the case halves at the bearing caps (I know this engine does not have bearing caps so pardon the term - it is the contact area when you bolt them down) had evidence of the same sealant that is used on the block case halves. Is this normal for a Subaru engine. The engines I've done before required nothing to be put there. In fact it is a critical area and improper torquing of the bearing cap could cause a crank bearing to spin. Has anyone seen this. If it's what Subaru calls for then no problem but as I said, I have never heard of this procedure before. Anyone familiar with this?
