Feedback on some used cars I'm looking at.
2000 Xterra. 92k miles listed for $10,890. Talked to Phil and he said that he noticed that the 2000 and 2001's had a lot of problems when he was working at Nissan dealer and they're uber expensive to get fixed.
'97 Outback. 97k miles listed for $7,995. EJ22 or EJ25? I can do the work myself on this and save money on down the road in service.
'99 Jeep Grand Cherokee. 4eat. Anyone have any thoughts or comments about these? Good, bad?

That 96 LSi would be awesome, but I can understand Jen's apprehension.
The 97 would be cool, and could never have a headgasket problem. But it could tomorrow.
Jeeps are nice, though for a while were renowned as being notoriously unreliable. If you get the I6, those things are wicked solid. Bad gas mileage though. You'd be better off insurance wise to get a 98 or older, the boxier body style. Also know, you can get the Xterra, and the WJ in 4x2, so if 4x4 isn't required, 4x2 saves weight, gas, and insurance.
I almost bought a 94 Limited with the 315, but got the 95 Legacy instead. Jeeps are pretty easy to work with, they can just be intimidating. Very simple technology, at least with the pre-98's.
Of the three, the Subaru would be the best choice IMO, espically if it's had the headgasket already done. Outback's are sweet.

A buddy of mine has a '99 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I've never driven it but its very comfortable to ride in. As Phil said it does not get great gas mileage. Slow but functional.
Another buddy of mine has a '97 Outback. He is the worst driver and takes really shitty care of his cars but it just keeps going. Its also nice to ride in-handles farely well for an stock wagon.
...and yes Outbacks are sweet.

Yeah, Jeeps have lots of problems with the exception of the I6 ENGINE. I've heard of accessory brackets breaking on the V8s. Doesn't speak well of quality if they can't get that right.
Nissan's suck to work on and the parts are expensive. You have to drop the skid pad to do an oil change and IIRC, they are held in with tiny shit bolts that invariably break off in the frame.
The price on that Outback does seem pretty high - I've seen GTs around here for that or a little cheaper. What about a regular Legacy with the 2.2? They're usually dirt cheap.

Midnight in a Perfect World on Amazon or order anywhere. The first book in a quartet chronicling the rise of a man from angry criminal to philanthropist. Midnight... is a distopic noirish novel featuring 'Duchess', a modified 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon.
Matt, where's the Outback located? I saw in the paper this morning that W&L has quite a few used Outbacks and Foresters and they love talking price.
Is your wife working in teh LBG (Lewisburg)? I think you said something about that once but since then I've forgotten. Taking 15 though the mountains in the winter can be exciting so 4WD/AWD is probably a must.
I'll keep my eyes peeled.

I'm pretty sure the Jeep G.C. has a 6 cylinder. Are all their 6's inline?
I thought the Outback seemed high too, I wouldn't pay that. I'd talk 'em down a thousand or two hopefully. It seems like ALL cars around here are waaaaay over priced!

Dude, your best friend is a car salesman (or used to be, whatev.) Those prices have to be high, or else the sales guy is gonna get screwed out of the deal. Someone's gotta make some money, ya know?
But I understand, even used car prices are a bit excessive. Good thing it's summer, and they aren't raising the price for the winter necessity of AWD.

Damn, they all suck!
The head gasket problem on the '97 OB is a big concern for me too.

That's why I suggest a regular Legacy as the 2.2 is a more durable engine and, at least around here, they're dirt cheap.

he was talking about when they stopped using the 2.2 in the outback.subyluvr2212 wrote:Jeeps are garbage. I'm surprised they don't have square wheels, their technology is so old. The 4.0 I6 is a venerable engine, but that's about all I can say.
And talk about hard to work on
professor, the 2.2 goes WAAAY past 95. It was available in the Legacy until 99, and in the Impreza until 01.

OK, update. Having a hard time getting the wife in an old subie. Plus our pay off amount on the Tahoe is more then it's worth so to get our money back on that, we are almost being forced into a new car. My pay off amount is about 5.5k over kbb trade in.
So, with these "employee discounts" that the other manufacturers are offering we are looking at an '05 Ford Escape XLT. The wife loves it, I'm a little pissy because if we're going to get a new car I want a GT wagon!
But Subie isn't offering the deals.
So, what do you all know about the Escapes? I had an Explorer back in the day and it was a major POS after 80k miles but from what I've heard so far the Escapes get a pretty damn good rating.

It seems like your choice has been made but I was going to offer that W&L Subaru is a good dealership. I recently put in a service request there online and they didn't shy away from fixing my turbo. They didn't bitch. They didn't put limits on what they'll do. They seem to generally be a good service facility.

Puleez don't do a Ford!! The money you save buying it will be lost fixing the POS down the road.
I've driven enough Fords in my life to wonder how anyone could own one and think they're driving a quality vehicle.
I drove an 03 Mustang around a gas station July 4th weekend, just from the store section over to the pump. Just in that .001 mile trip I already determined the car is a complete heap. There is absolutey no sense of quality in that car or any other Ford I've driven. And I've driven a good number of them.

Ya, I know. I hated our Explorer. The Escape has gotten really good rating though.
Scott- Ya, W&L is the shit. I've already been down there and talked to them. They have a treasure down there right now that I might be posting up soon too. It's silver and cherry with only 74k miles.!
I might be looking at a slightly used Outback now, like an '03 or something. It's not a new GT but at least it's a Subaru!

ford=recall
every single Ford model is always having some sort of major recall, and there would be more except that Ford is paying the NHSTA to keep quiet on all the problems
