Since I have the tranny apart, I could get rid of the front gear section.

Then I would have the only RWD Supercharged Legacy!

Of course then I would also be the only legacy that burned out 1 rear wheel at the drag strip.

I plan to, since I have a spare center dif in the garage. I'm going to mod that, and keep the one that's in it now, so I can switch back and forth in a matter of a couple of hours.

If you broke the FWD and dont feel like fixing it, then I'd say yes. As a temperary fix. I've driven my old brat in RWD mode for extended periods. Ive also driven my lifted wagon in RWD from Redding Ca, to Albany Oregon where I could fix my busted front shaft.

I would think about running a LSD and find a way to lock the center diff. With the wieght of the wagon, im not sure how the car would handle. Expecially since youve supercharged it.

But RWD subies are fun! Too bad they dont have front ebrakes like the old school subies.

Definitely! These boring people don't know how fun it is to slide up streets sideways. It would be a blast in an old wagon! I've been thinking of this myself as (even with New England winters you big sissies

) I wouldn't have to worry about blowing weak ass transmissions. I wonder how hard it would be to fit a 6-speed from a Z28?

Go for shits and giggles! Lotta RWD bashing around here. I used to love RWD. If you are in an urban area and always fenced onto pavement, then RWD is much more fun than AWD. With AWD, you've really gotta beat the crap out of your car to loose traction, even in the rain.

And have you guys seen all the Impreza RWD conversions done in Japan for drifting? Did anyone catch that article in the last issue of Subiesport?

Of course loosing AWD would be a bummer.
I mean I would miss being able to wile'n'out in the rain, dirt, and gravel.

Why mod a car at all with that attitude? And what rwd small fiarly modern wagon alternative is there? With a boxer?

Too bad it won't happen now. If I ever get enough money I'll do it. There are other means to traction anyway.

What are you talking about? If you're going to take my view on the drivetrain and apply it to every single aspect of the car, then there is no reason to mod it. I just don't understand why you would to take an AWD vehicle and conver it to 2WD? To be different? Whatever, Merkur makes cars too. If you want to be different there are other ways to do it. I think his car is plenty different as it is, but I suppose some 2WD, dropped, shaved handled, wagon is the shit.

I convert the fucker cause I can't get the damn tranny back together right. I have assembled it three times now and the damn pinion gear is not getting engaged correctly because of something. And the shims are giving me shit.

So while I probably won't do it, I at last resort will pull the pin that connects the front axles.

I really don't want to take it to a tranny shop but I may have to. I started this morning tearing the other tranny apart to get the internals, and now, 6 hours later, it is nowhere near completion. bleah.

And Thawa, I hate to tell you this but there are plenty of FWD subarus, remember? Are you going to convert them all to your AWD religion?

I have had 4 FWD subes. If I end up with a RWD, then so be it. I can live with it.

I had a FWD soob and I got stuck because I went nose first through a 2" mud puddle with a little bit of slick mud on the bottom, and then found out the trail ended right after the puddle, so I tried to back out, got my rear wheels up on the main road, and the front started spinning.. needless to say I ended up walking 6 miles to my house to get the blazer that was parked there because I called and nobody there could drive stick to come pull me out.....

I'll never own another FWD soob. (unless it's to part out)

As for the shims, they are the the drive pinion shims #22

If there is not enough shims, or too few shims, your drive pinion shaft gets locked, instead of free spinning. I apparently need to add a shim, even though I transferred all parts, with no mixing.

And the biggest hassle is the "clunk, clunk, clunk" of the pinion turning the front axles. Not sure if this is supposed to be there or not. If you spin the nut (#32) with a wrench fairly quickly, there is no clunk. But if you spin if slow, there is. I suspect this is because the front bearing (#2) is not seated correctly. This bearing is WAY difficult to seat because it has a pin in the casing that locks it in place. It is a BITCH to get this pin located and pressed in properly. Fuck!!!!!!!!

To top it off, I damaged some stuff as well but did manage to fix it all, but I did have to do some serious swearing. My employees stayed in the other room for about 15 minutes when I realized I broke off a drill bit INSIDE a very important hole. 2 minutes of pound on the casing dislodged it, but I say the swearing helped.
