Here's my problem, I just noticed something funny tonight.
When the car is sitting still, I can let the clutch out with the transmission in neutral and elevate the rpms - a very odd sounding rough metallic noise starts up and increases with engine RPM's.
now if I hold the rpms steady and push the clutch in, the clutch spins down, and the metallic noise does with it.
I checked the transmission fluid the other day, it looks to be in really good condition; nice tan color, doesn't smell bad or anything - plenty of fluid in it too.
changed the rear differential fluid today (some castrol generic shit, 80W-90) and that went without a hitch.
any clues?
Very odd bearing/grinding noise in transmission.

by a long time you mean somewhere around 30 thousand miles or more?
bought this car second owner with 133250 on the clock, it's at 153420 today.
I've always heard a bearing noise in neutral with the clutch out at idle, it's just becoming louder now, I've yet to hear it in gear in a normal situation.
I'm in need of new tires and brakes, I just hope the transmission doesn't give on me as soon as I spend my money on the first two.

dude, i have the same problem in my 90 legacy ls sedan. its been going on forever too but it still drives. its there all the time if i don't warm up my car and i just start driving. but once its warm, i only get it in low torque situations. just to say it again, i've been having it for a while (years) and it runs fine. i hope yours does too. these cars are pretty reliable.
