coolant leak much....

Post by snowboarded »

Driving home from New York in my friends 89 Toyota Corolla we stopped for gas this one time. Some guy pointed out that we lost some coolant on the ground. After a semi thorough inspection by yours truly I saw that it was on the frame beneath the tank. I didn't see any cracks so I guessed that driving for a while the heat of the car caused this old stock hose that is attached to the coolant reservoir to expand, thereby allowing coolant to leak on the frame and subsequently onto the ground. Now when he initially shut it off, the car had a bit of a leak, a puddle. I had him move the car back a few feet to see if it were still leaking, and only two drops appeared on the ground in over 5 minutes. Likely this was coolant that had already spilled out. So I figured that the hose had returned to its normal size, thereby stopping the leak. After topping off the coolant I gave him the ok and we went on our merry way.

Any thoughts on this? Was I right or is it something else that could have caused the leak?

I'll bet the plastic end tank fitting is cracked inside the hose - you don't see the typical spray from a busted hose, and it can start and stop

if you remove the hose from the offending area - you'll be able to bust off the end tank plastic fitting with your fingers, and that's if it doesn't come off with the hose. Don't do this unless you have already located the replacement

look on the bright side - 16 years is good for a plastic radiator, better than average
