something must have slipped up my undercarriage

Post by anthonyle2002 »

hi there. i just found this site and i'm in love with it already. my question is that my engine and like the underside of the car is really really dirty. the underside is full of this thick black gooey stuff. i was wondering if there was a way i could clean this and my engine.

simple green. You can buy a gallon of the stuff at an auto supply shop.

you know they coat the underside of the car with black gooey stuff from the factory, right?

Mine's not really gooey anymore.

It's just peeling off at a few places.

simple green. ok. what am i suppose to do with it besides pour it onto the engine. i'm sure there's stuff that i'm not suppose to get wet.

and my black gooey stuff cracks and peels and falls off if i poke at it.

You mean the Cosmolene(sp?) That stuff is stock my friend, as scott said, it's undercoating. And no, don't pour simple green into the engine.

I think it was meant to (think Jessica Simpson from the new Dukes of Hazzard)......

Apply Simple Green with a squirt bottle. If you need to, dilute it first.

The crumbling black stuff is the factory undercoating. When new it looks better, and over time, it starts cracking and peeling. This is natural.

If you want to, go to an autoparts store and get a new can of undercoating to touch up the spots that are peeling. Really, it doesn't matter much, though.

I don't recommend squirting Simple Green "everywhere on the engine." I do recommend that you follow the directions on the product.

Simple green is a good thing to use(environmentally friendly) but nobody on the detailing forum that I frequent is willing to detail engines with it, because of how it reacts with aluminum. There are good engine degreasers available that work well, I'd suggest the gunk foamy engine brite.

Be sure and try to blow out your spark plug tubes
