Getting faster and faster, at rebuilds that is.
2.75 hours tonight to pull and tear down.
I drove into the shop at 9:20 with a half rack of bud.
5 beers later and at 12:10 I stop working.
I started by assembling the engine hoist from its various parts. Get to work unbolting the various parts to the Supercharger and intercooler. Unbolt engine and unhook all the wiring components. About 50 minutes later the motor is out.
Get the motor mounted on engine stand. Start tear down. And I do mean tear down.
I cracked it down to the block. Since I may have cracked the block somewhere, and I might as well have the cylinders honed, I tore it all apart.
So at 12:10 I have it 100% demolished. Not cleaned up or put away but its apart!
The cylinders didnt suffer much from the 20 minutes of water starvation, but I did melt some stuff! The knock sensor was melted down to the core and looked like a wax candle! All the plastic plates behind the cam gears were melted where they bolted onto the heads. That engine got DAMN hot.
The bearing did suffer. The damage to them is very minor, but its there. There was a single flake of metal in the oil, and in all the oil changes and three previous rebuilds, I had never seen any metal flakes (piston ringlands yes, bearing flake no).
I am going to rebuild this motor 100% as long as the block didnt suffer any damage. But I am going to mill out the pistons so they are about 8.75 - 1 to 9 -1 compression. And then if I cannot get high boost via supercharger (15 psi plus), I will pull the turbo block and reinstall this motor (with engine management finally!).
Good night.

You think it's crazy that you melted the knock sensor?
I was at my friends shop last night, and we had to pull an STi into the shop (with a blown tahoe on 23's
) because it had MELTED THE TIMING BELT! Fucking crazy.

Thats me, Hero Material!
Did that injector work out for you?
I still think you should stick in an NA tranny for the time being. Or do what I did and swap guts with a working/busted tranny.
Then you can actually save for a hardcore tranny.

Put the pistons and new rings in the turbo block last night. I also installed a new front main seal, oil ring, waterpump, and swapped over some of the NA coolent lines which are larger than the turbo ones. I had to hack up the head gaskets something fierce as the coolent areas ARE NOT the sam above the bore for the turbo and NA.
I may have it running tonight, tommorrow for sure.
I will be rallycrossing on Sunday.

I seized the engine.
I am going to go out and kill something since I don't believe in suicide.
Apparently, a timing belt put on backwards will FUCK YOU UP. I don't now if I put it on backwards for sure but thats all I can figure out. FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK CUKG FUCK FUCK CUVKD C FUCK !!!!!!!
I turned it over and it fired once and a puff of smoke came out of somewhere. Then I tried it again and there was a wierd sound. I looked around the engine bay, saw I had a unhooked vacumn hose, hooked it up and tried again.
Grinding noise. As in the starter can't turn it over. I try with a breaker bar and can't
FUCK VUCK VUCK FUCK FUCK!!!
I am too shot to pull the motor out tonight.
I bet I just fucked up both brand new rebuilt heads.
I turned it over by hand a few times with the engine out of the wagon, but obviosly not enough to catch the problem.
FUCK!

If you used the stock heads, you couldn't have fucked it up. The engine is a non-interference engine. Did you split the block and rebuild, or did you just replace pistons?
You sure the problem isn't the starter or something associated with that?
Did you turn over the engine with the starter to help build the oil pressure?

In retrospect, and 89 drink later ( I am now just passing out) I know something I did DID NOT cause the problems..
I ran the the engine without spark or gas for a minute or so before firing it up. Therefore it should have siezed then.
To say I am pissed is an undrerstatement.

OK,
Motor is back out.
The drivers side head is tweaked. Don't know what is wrong, but it won't turn over. I will have to dissassemble it and see if it is anything obvious.
On the good side of this fiasco, I found I had pinched and cut a water line under the intake manifold which would have been a bitch to find and fix.
Oh, and 45 minutes this time to pull the engine. I bet if I get all my tools together, someday I will be able to pull and engine in less than 30 minutes!

Well,
Someone at the cylinder head shop is going to get a serious ass reaming come Monday morning.
Whoever assembled the head got a piece of metal INSIDE the center cam race. Chewed the hell out of it. I suspect it cannot be fixed. I am sticking on an older dirty head just to get the wagon running and out the door. I will swap a new head on when I return from vacation. Fuck.

Dude that sucks!! Yeah, I'd ream their ass out good.
I pulled the rocker assemblies today on my heads to bleed the lifters. I'm surprised they didn't do that. Also, they didn't lube the cam lobes either....again, surprised. Anyway, I know it's done correctly now.

Well, it gets worse.
I put a good but old head on. Reassemble the entire engine and get it back in.
It RUNS! I drive it up and back about 1 mile. I pop the radiator cap to add more water.
POOOOOOOOSHHHHHH!
Bad headgasket........There is air just blowing out of the radiator.
DO NOT BUY ROCK BRAND gasket sets!
I don't know which headgasket is bad, I am assuming its going to be the one I reused, but that is one shitty ass gasket if simply torquing it down and then reusing it causes it to fail. I compared them to some used head gaskets I have lying around the shop and they appeared to be inferior, but I certainly didn't suspect this!
My God, I am getting pissed.

Apperently I need to concur. But considering the engine had never been run, I had to gamble.
I will be pulling the motor once again tommorrow and replacing the headgasket with a different used gasket which is 100% better than the last one. The rock gasket just sucked.

yes.
I have done it before with no problems at all. But this time, because of the poor quality of the head gaskets this time, the cutting up combined with the removal and reinstallation probably caused the leak.

I can't remember now, but don't the gaskets have the graphite coating on parts for better sealing? If they do, you can't reuse them once torqued since the graphite adheres to the metal surfaces. I ruined a set of riser gaskets (I/O 454 Mercruisers) like that once when I forgot to do something before putting the risers on ... for both engines. Felt like an ass, but at least they're not too expensive.
