Manually controlling AWD?

Post by Splinter »

It probably wouldnt even be a useful thing to do, but would it be possible to hack the AWD computer to allow you to manually set the power assignment?

I guess when it could be useful would be setting it to mostly rear wheel drive for hard fast straight acceleration (i.e. quarter mile)

Not the power assignment, but the lockup. You can't get RWD, but you could fully lock the rear axle to the front one.

You don't need to hack the TCU. Just make your own little controller for Duty Solenoid C, and give the TCU some kind of dummy solenoid or resistor so it still thinks it's controlling the solenoid.

Your controller would just pulse width modulate the solenoid at a duty cycle determined by your input. About 5% would be almost no lockup (FWD), and about 95% would be almost full lockup (4WD).

Vikash,

I think you got those numbers backwards, unless I'm mis-reading that the 5% is referring to the "off" portion of the pulsed signal.

Sending 100% duty to the solenoid makes the trans FWD. ie with the FWD fuse.

Oh, yes, you're right; I did indeed get it backwards.

so what your saying Vikash, (hi by the way long time no talk), is that we could with the use of a variable resistor make a little knob to adjust awd to fwd like in the STI. I know its not the same as the sti but it would be a half assed version of a similar concept right?

blah disregard this post....I just read the 4 page post on doing this same thing......

Hi Mike!

Hehe, yeah, it's pretty simple in principle, and should be so in practice as well. But apparently nobody's done it yet. If I had a 4EAT I probably would have tried by now.

Would that I had the time... Just give it a shot yourself; it's not that hard. :)

Desgning The Knob

Post by Alvaro Alonso »

Hi,
I could do some electronic design for a pulse width modulator conected to a knob.
Is it interesting?

I might have time to play with this in a few years. I've been out in detroit every week only returning home on the weekends to work on my bathroom renovation on my new condo. I have never been so maxed out. There are not enough hours in a day......
