Semi Urgent Exhaust question
Ok so my car is in the shop for inspection and it needs a new exhaust. My current setup is dead, shot to hell as the owner of the shop puts it. I don't disagree as it is louder than a motorcycle and causes crazy vibration in the footwells. Anyway so my father decided to take a look online to help me out and found all the parts for an exhaust (at least I think) for like 500 bucks.
Seeing as we never have had to replace it before I'm not sure what to do.
We'd like to take care of this asap...

Are you asking is it something you and your father can do?
I'd say so. All you need is a garage, jack stands, a jack, and your normal tools. Some penetrating oil wouldn't be a bad investment either.

All of it. 260K of Pennsylvania's finest roads will destroy anything I guess. I mean it's a lot of mileage on what really is kinda wear item.
I'm asking if 500 bucks is a good deal for the cat and back. I think I need a cat, mid pipe, and muffler along with the associated gaskets and hangers.

$500 is a high estimate. So, you should keep on looking around. You could get headers (used), a cat, and a custom midpipe to a magnaflow muffler for around $500 (if you shop right).
So I'd say you should look to around $300 for all that stuff. Don't buy OEM, it's much more expensive than it would be aftermarket.

I've seen a few muffler shops in Williamsport, 30 minute drive, that's not to far is it?
You'll save money not going with OEM, but it will be more hassle.

there is one in milton which is much closer but they're kinda shady looking, the shop the car is at isn't excatly a muffler shop they do a lot of work for our family though, but they really specialize in, get this, tractor pullers... hah
but they're good and do good cheap work so it'd make sense for them to do labor

Ya, $500 for a NA catback is kind of a lot. $250-$300 sounds about right though.

The thread next door might be useful. Most of it applies to turbo back exhaust, but not all:

thanks Sam, it gives me a good idea
unfortunately apparently I need new headers as well
I think i'm going to end up with trying to find some mildly used Borlas or something and taking it to an exhaust shop in Milton or Williamsport to get a custom header back setup.
