Opinion : drop ej22T into a '94 GT wagon

or

5MT swap into '93 touring wagon with bad 4EAT

or

BMW M3 (this costs a bit more!)

the professor would like to get turbo'd at some point and is researching the alternatives. He does not want to disable his reliable daily driver L wagon at any time, so no turbo motor for that one

Isn't number 1 and 2 basically the same thing? I''d go with whichever you find a better example of.

Of course a good bmw trumps both.

If you want a 'fun' car, get the M3. You'll have RWD to play with and it'll spank the touring wagon.

Option 1 has a raised roof, which is nice. But it has a push-type cable clutch. But it's the easier of the two Subaru options, in my opinion.

Option 2 has the possibility of a pull-type hydraulic clutch. But it's the harder job and leaves you with an ordinary roof.

Option 3 is not a Legacy.

94 GT wagons are special and should be left un-modded IMO.

Really, the sedan is a better chassis for spirited driving, AND it comes with the coveted 5mt turbo combo.

The fun car really shouldn't have to accomodate kids. That's what the DD is for, right?
Might as well go with the M3, that way you have RWD to play with. Assuming your legacy is AWD of course.

Reed's right --The M3, while expensive, is a good option. Plus, the 95s aren't OBDII yet, so they have TONS of tuning potential. Good cars, if well taken care of. If you've got the money, do that. Otherwise, try one of the tranny swap options. Good luck!

61k all factory service, service II performed recently, replaced timing belt, water pump, struts, perfect body and interior

and no salt ever, it was in AZ until last year

'95 also have the same size tires front and back, forged wheels, and the afore-mentioned tunability, and a sweeter top end than the 3.2 motors

build a GT-B clone but w/the better single turbo set up.

I really have to wonder about the sanity of the 7 people who would take a 5mt TW over a 95 m3.

I've gotten to spend a fair bit of quality time in a 97 automatic, and even that was quite a bit more fun than my legacy.

I think it depends. I'd have more fun spending the money on a Subaru build than maintain a BMW.

I would build a 93 Impreza wagon with a EJ20G for a wagon.

BMW's are neat...and the reason that I would say go with that is that it is RWD... Don't get me wrong, I love Subies and AWD...but being able to snap into a drift and burnout is lots of fun...and BMW's are torque monsters... I am a big proponent of having different brands of cars, because then you get to learn how to work on all sorts of stuff...

Plus...they really are not that bad to maintain. My friend has a BMW and I am the sole maintainer of his 535i, and I have had no problems really...apart from they are a little differently put together...the parts aren't even that much if you buy them from www.thepartsbin.com (awesome place for Subie parts to!!!)

Anyway...that's just my .02

the bmw would be my 3rd, one per decade

my first one I paid 1500 for, drove it 10 years and 100,000 miles, and it got totalled out for 2400

I have a 87 325is right now, great car but its rusting on the trunk where the pie truck hit me 10 years ago (4th day I had the car ):evil:

I am patiently waiting until a friend here is ready to sell me his '95 M3--one owner, 50K, lovingly cared for, and a blast to drive. I'll keep the wagon to haul stuff and tow the sailboat. I love her but she's no sports car.

Of those three choices I'd pick the TW. I wouldn't swap the tranny though, just rebuild the stocker. I wouldn't choose any of those personally. Maita with a turbo kit would be sweet, gen 2 RX7 would be sweet also, less reliable though. 240SX would be kinda fun if you did a turbo swap. Galant VR4 would be great, but again the reliablity. Or, for a sleeper you could get an Impulse RS.

One of the great things about Legacy's and older M3's is the stealth factor. They aren't flashy like the newer models, so they don't attract a lot of police attention. I was cruising at 80 the other day in a 70 zone on I-10 when a new Dodge Magnum passed me doing about 2 mph faster as we ran up on 3 Florida HP cars in the median. They had no radar going at the time, or at least my detector didn't chirp. They pointed at him, jumped into their cars and nailed him, and I just kept on trucking. Stealth is a good thing.
