Got the finger while passing someone

Post by Splinter »

THe road to my house is a long long two lane country road. There is only one spot safe to pass. It's about a quarter mile long straight dip in the road. Probably descends 50 feet and goes back up to the same level over the course of the 50 feet.

There were two slow people ahead of me, maybe doing 50 (kmph). This is not an actual passing zone, it's a single yellow line, which in BC means 'pass with extreme caution' it's basically what they do to roads in which they dont want to properly evaluate.

Now, what I did next is illegal, but it was pretty safe given the visibility and the location of the two cars. They were probably 5 car lengths apart from each other, going at a pretty steady speed. As soon as I had a clear view of the dip to make sure the other side of the road was clear, I dropped the hammer and pulled out. Just as I was pulling up level to the second car, a Jeep came round the corner at the top of the hill, so I breaked and pulled in between the two cars I was trying to pass. About 7 seconds later, the Jeep goes by, with his finger out the window and his hand on the horn.

wtf?

I could understand if Id keep going and overtaken the second car and pulled in, but I aborted, safely, and tucked myself back in in plenty of time.

What do you guys think of that?

I think the main problem is that the guy in the jeep is a stupid asshole.

I can't stand 99% of other drivers. The worst is when you're behind a car on a windy road with small passing lanes few and far between, and assholes will speed up/not move to the right when one comes up. I caught up, I want to go faster, deal with it and let me by. You're not the "drive 10 under the speed limit" police.

I was once driving up to SLO for a rally, and we decided to try out a short cut down some back road on the way up. I'm behind a van, who is behind some other car, for a very long time. Finally we get a passing lane. Van pulls into the left lane to pass the other car. Drives the majority of it directly beside the other car. I actually flashed my driving lights and had my left turn signal on, and he wouldn't move over or speed up, or slow down. This is all happening at 40 in a 55. My nav even suggested crossing the double yellow and going around on the left. The van finally got enough space to pull back to the right, and still wouldn't move over. The lane was coming to a end, so I cut through the gap and passed him on the right. Lane courtesy people. I guess I sort of sound like a road-raging asshole, but I was following at a safe distance, and gave him plenty of time to make the pass before I started to get a little impatient.

it's kind of like when I catch up to someone in the left lane, they don't move over, then I look like that asshole for cutting over two lanes to get around them.

Yup.

I've had people catch up to me at red lights effing and blinding me for passing them on the right, when they're tooling along at 70 in a 90 in the lefthand lane.

There's also this intersection near my old highschool that people always get confused and POed about.

The road that goes off to the right is two lanes. There's a right turn sliplane for traffic on my side of the road, and a leftturn signal for traffic on the other side of the road. The lefthand traffic should theoretically turn into the lefthand lane, and the righthand traffic into the righthand lane, right?

Well, I stopped at a red, then proceeded to turn right while the green turn left arrow was on, and someone was turning left. They slammed on the brakes, swerved and gave me a 10 second blast on the horn because THEY switched lanes in the middle of their turn!!

I've also had people give me blasts for cutting them off from an exit when they didnt even have their indicator turned on. IT TAKES .01 SECONDS TO TURN ON YOUR INDICATOR, IF YOU DONT DO IT, I DONT KNOW WHERE YOU WANT TO GO.

Idiots.

I like how people go like under the speed limit, even when I'm trying to shove them along to go just a little faster...People call that aggressiveness, I call that someone in my way.

After bouncing around the country for the past few years, I've found that CO drivers actually spoiled me(TX/CA immigrants/flatlanders in the mountains are exceptions). The mountains are the only area where I've found that people really follow the left lane is for passing only law. In the Mid West/Northern Plains and now out East, the left lane is not the fast lane.

Hehe. Same here. People tell me I ride people's ass, and then I tell them: "Notice how I never ride someone's ass if they're going the speed limit?"

Another thing I can't stand... I'll sometimes be approaching a red light with someone in front of me, and then the light turns green. Most lights from secondary to main roads don't last very long, but these friggen idiots in front of me are too busy masturbating in their car to understand that. So while this light is green and very soon going to change, I'm riding these people's ass honking my horn and flashing my lights. Then, the coup de gras: they see the light turn yellow, they haul ass through it, and leave me stuck at the red light.

I personally love how people are SO afraid of being around cops, that they'll go out of their way(change lanes) to not be in front of said cop, then proceed to slow down to 10-20 under the speed limit, because they're afraid of getting ticketed. Fuck that.

I have a problem with road rage..If someone flips me off or honks at me for no reason i'll stop them and ask them what they want if i can get close enough, usually they take off when i get out of the car. Anyway, i'll probably end up getting shot someday.
One of my friends from serbia is the same way. We were driving near campus one day and some bum sitting on the side of the road yelled at him, something like F*** u, suck my blah blah blah. And george stopped the car in the middle of the street and got out and walked over to him and was like do you have a problem? I thought the bum was gonna piss himself. The other bum next to him was like you can beat him up if you want. George ended up telling him he was stupid then got back into the car and we left. I was laughing pretty hard.

I'm extremely laid back but for some reason, stupid people set me off.

People in Wisconsin usually know that the left lane is for passing, but I see a lot of people just pull out, and then sit there....

Probably the wierdes thing I saw, was on a two lane highway:

There was this minivan, going really slow, and there weren't many passing opportunities (he was going about 35 in a 55) but I managed to pass him before I got into the smallish town that I was going through. So I'm ahead of him a goodly distance, and in town, I slow down to 40 (in a 35) and he gets right up on my ass, and then passes me on the right (illegal, 1/2 lane at most in a residential area) and goes 55 all the way through town! On the other side, sure enough, he's going about 35 in the middle of a 55 zone....person must've been on drugs

I get kinda road ragey at people like that

I know I shouldnt, but damnit, they need to be educated.

I'll get infront of them, slow down to like 20 and every time they go to pass Ill punch it again

Although given their intellect, they probably are incapable of associating the punishment with their crime

You're right Mark. I see a lot of that too. I wish I could get away with PIT maneuvering people. I'm actually thinking of resurrecting my old CB/HAM radio so I can use the PA function and external speaker. That always got people's attention.

at a stop sign waiting to get on a 2 lane mountain highway, after waiting for quite some time, i pull out between 2 cars about 10 car links apart, plenty of room. i time it perfect, gun it and slide perfectly in between. well guy behind me starts waving his arms around honking, you name it. seeing this i decide to see if i can get him really pissed. so the next straight away comes up, i slow from the traffics speed of 35 to about 20. well he goes to pass and needless to say, i dont let him. we were neck and neck pretty much the entire length of the straight away. so we get to the end and he has to slam on the brakes and pull back in behind me. we get to town and the guy starts motioning to pull over, still waving his arms and shouting. this guy was freakin out!

well i didn't pull over, i dont wanna get shot

if i had been thinking, i would have pulled into the police parking lot, it was right there! i would have loved to hear what he had to say.

and pretty much everytime i have seen the finger, it was for absolutely nothing - i think most who use it have the intellect of a 12 year old

i am much more sophisticated. i have the intellect of a 13 year old 8)

The cops showed up at our door one time because my dad passed someone at the same spot I got the finger for passing. The guy he passed was a retired cop from newfoundland. Over there, you're not allowed to pass on a single yellow, so they retired cop phoned the police station and said my dad passed him illegally

What he didnt say, is that as soon as my dad pulled out to pass him, he floored it to stop my dad getting past. My dad drives a 2002 3.5L Altima tho, and the cop was driving some V8 Pickup, so my dad just snuck by.

So the cop comes, and tells my dad he got a complaint and my dad was like 'I passed him legally, on the single yellow in the dip' and the cop asked him if he was speeding, and my dad said 'Not until he accelerated to try and stop me getting past'

The cop put away his notebook and apologised to my dad for taking up his time.
