92 Subaru Legacy Wagon--Yay or Nay?

Post by r-monster »

Greetings,

I just found this forum so please be patient. I am thinking of buying a 92 Legacy wagon turbo AWD with about 175k miles on it.

Is there anything I need to look out for? How good is the stock turbo for longevity since it is not intercooled? I know the motors are excellent, what about the trannies?

Any help would be appreciated.

Trans is definitely the weak link, (the autos anyway). Make sure it shifts smoothly and when its supposed to, and make sure the AWD engages!

Welcome!

Get it and do the 5MT swap. There's plenty of info here on how to do it.

Suby for you-by

Post by r-monster »

Thanxs for the replies, I am a bit worried about replacing the tranny ( if needed) as my local Japanese specialist doesnt do much Subaru stuff. I am not worrried as much about the engine since it doesnt make too much power it should go for a long time.

How rare is the turbo auto transmission? What other Suby's used this box?

Any good sites for info on this early Legacy? Who is a good supplier for used trannies and motors for this car?

I wont be doing a MT swap as I will be sitting in traffic too much and aint into 'pimpin' da clutch' anymore.

This site should be all you'll need.

All of the legacy turbo wagons came in automatic trim. If/when the transmission goes out(it most likely will) the tranny change-out, if you're staying with automatic should be relatively simple, I'm not sure what other cars in the US used this transmission, but most of the turbo automatics in the early 90's overseas used it. The 95 wrx that my turbo came off of had the 3.9 auto. You could also get a different transmission from another car, all you'd need to do is replace the rear differential guts.
