CVaxles.com order received - damaged

Post by Busdriver »

I just received my front axle from cvaxles.com

The inner cv is in good condition, the outer cv though, will not turn or move a bit, it's completely stuck in a crooked position.
The metal dust ring is also smashed completely.

So I called to see what this is and he told me "oh it's normal, we use new ball bearings and braces and thus some might be tight, just put the end into a vice and move it several times...
No the bearing is not scored or damaged, just put it in.
Leave the dust ring out or reuse your old one it's not an important piece..."

He was very nice and told me to contact him if the cv fails, but it really shouldn't.

Now I've worked with my bus cv's a few times, faulty boots...
Never had I experienced a stuck bearing.
I am very hesitant in putting that axle shaft on my soobster only to take it out a month later again..

Have you guys ever experienced this problem or have dealt with cvaxles.com??

Thanks

My brother once had a driveshaft fabricated and I picked it up to find I couldn't turn the U-joint. We took it to an associated shop, and the guy at the desk looked at it and seemed to think something was wrong, so we took it back to the guy who originally put it together. He said the tolerances were just really tight and it normally breaks in pretty fast, but for our case he offered to take it into his shop and loosen it up for us. He did take it back, and it took him a little while, but he handed me back a driveshaft with a freely moving U-joint.

I don't know for sure what exactly he did.

Last summer we swtiched out the front cv shafts in my car, I had a bizarre squeaking at a fully cranked wheel at low speeds. After about a week it went away.

if CV joints are moved beyond the intended angle, they will get "stuck" like that. It often happens when you are trying to wrestle on out of a confined space, like out from under a car.

In my experience you just have to knock it with a rubber mallet and it will straighten out and turn freely.

Not sure what the dust ring looks like on that one but that bothers me more.

Why shouldn't it be replaced if it is damaged ? Let them swap the dust ring - they are the experts, supposedly.

So I think I'm gonna return it, I called this morning to see how we will handle it and the lady on the phone asked " you want to return your cv axle?, I'll have this guy call you back"

an hour later still no call back...

Any experiences with these guys??

The guys at cvaxles.com are pretty good. I had a similar experience with one of the axles they sent me. It was stiff and didn't move too freely. They said the same thing regarding the tolerences and what not.

I was going to install them, but when I pulled my old axles out, they were different in shape. I think the axles they sent me were from a 95-99 legacy. He said they should work. I didn't feel comfortable with them, so I sent them mine to rebuild, and shipped the ones they sent back.

So the stiff axle thing I never got to verify......but they do stand behind their work 100%. There is end cap on the inner joints. It came un done, and was spewing grease around. They sent me a new axle, and that was it.....and that was about a year or so after I had originally put the axles in.

The metal dust ring....can you bang it back into shape? It's the inner dust ring right? I wouldn't say it's super critical, but yeah it'd be nice to have it there.

I called them up again and were very helpful!

got me a mailing label and will return a new axle including axle nut and roll pin.

So until we see the next arrival they get a thumbs up for service...

Yeah, cvaxles.com has a reputation to uphold. They know that people all over the Subaru online community know about them and they know that if there's a bad experience, the shit will hit the fan in no time. So they will do whatever they can to make you happy.
