Horrible whine...differential?

Post by bmxpunk »

SO my car has had this horrible whine since I swapped in the legacy tranny and rear diff. I think it is coming from the rear diff and the noise is not load dependent. If I am above 20mph i get the noise and it gets louder with increased speed. The noise goes away for just a second when I lift offf of the throttle, but comes back as the car slow down. The noise is also there when I am coasting in neutral. A subaru tech rode with me and said it isnt the wheel bearings, but is sounds like diff to him. He said it sounds similar to the legacies and out backs when there front diff has the wrong tension(?) only much more high pitched.

When I installed every thing, i used the redline 70w90ns.

It is really annoying but it seems to go away when the stereo is turned up to like 18 :-D

any ideas? There isnt a tension or lash adjustment on a 1993 legacy SS rear diff is there? it isnt lsd or any thing? right?

There IS a lash adjustment on our front and rear diffs. I'm fairly certain on the rear anyways.

There is a downside though. Lash is measured to the ten-thousandth of an inch and requires a special tool. Just having a mechanic check the lash is going to cost you several dollars.

It's really high pitched, you say? Hmmm.... It may be a bearing that is seized. The near-blown WRX's I've ridden in (though all front diff's, no rears) have a high pitched almost grinding noise.

I wonder if your subie-tech would let you put it on a lift and put it in 1st and let it idle at speed (you may have to go a little faster). Listen with a steth, and you might be able to diagnose it a bit better.

Without riding in it, it's difficult to diagnose, but lash is a good consideration, though improper lash is a different noise than seized or bad bearing, but I'd describe both as kind of a whine.

You could try taking the rear diff cover off of the diff and inspecting, or at the very least replacing the fluid and checking for metal. If there's metal, it's likely the lash eating away at the ring or pinion.

Did you drive the car you got the tranny and diff out of? Would you be able to work out compenastion with the person you bought it from for selling you a bad diff (did they say it was good and in proper working order?)

My friend is 1 of 2 certified suby techs in town. He took the ecu I bought from Matt monson so he owes me lots!!!

No I didnt get to drive the car before I got the rngie trann and diff out of it, so no compensation.

My tech friend said it sounds really similar to a font diff out of adjust, just higher pitched.

i just changed the diff fluid and it has made the noise from day one.

you are gonna kil me, but i did a slight hand brake turn the other day (snow) and it quieted the noise just a bit afterward.

You ought to try putting it on a lift, running in 1st or 2nd.....verify you can hear the noise, and slowly/gently pull up on the ebrake while still maintaining engine speed, and see if you can get the pitch of the whine to change, or go away.
