I just scooped up a 91 turbo tranny in a JY with 172K on it, plus necessary goodies for my swap. I've solved any compatibility problems with my '93 wgn, but I'm not sure yet if I have a hunk of iron or a nugget of jy gold.
I'm sure it'll need a new gearset, but I haven't read much on the longevity of the center and front diffs in these, not to mention the internal case condition.
Can anyone enlighten me on what I'm looking at to have it rebuilt. It seems to shift OK, though rough between 3rd an 4th. I don't know if a static jy shift test tells me anything.
I don't want to go crazy with expensive gearsets, though a better than stock set might be worth doing. I can get a stage 1 clutch and lightened flywheel for about $600 total, but just a rebuild may already break the wife's budget.
Any advice would be appreciated. (not about the wife)

Parts are hard/impossible to get if the actual gears are damaged. Sycros I think you can get.
2nd gear for the bazillion 90-94 NA trannies is only available on special order FROM JAPAN, and this gear is a gear that they may even HAVE TO MAKE! Not much support on the guts of the damn things to say the least.
