The dyno testing results that I have seen show that replacing the stock headers is not a good value. A lot of those "bag-of-snakes" headers either produce a power drop across the boar or screw up your low end power. Replacing the hydraulic valve lash adjusters with solid ones and going to a stand-alone ecu, adding sophisticated water injection, improving the intercooler, and freeing up the exhaust donstream of the turbo would all provide a lot better power improvement. I have WRX headers on my (USA) Legacy turbo and I gained nothing. My stock Legacy turbo headers were every bit as good as the headers on a 22B and perfectly suitable for upwards of 300bhp.
On another subject, Legacy turbo automatics are the same as SVX automatics. They share internal components with Mazda 626 cars of the same era. SVXs are notorious transmission (gearbox for our UK readers) eaters. The SVX bulletin board that is equivalent to ours recommends adding an external transmission oil cooler and filter and changing fluid regularly.
On the understeer subject, I run stock springs, and wheels with really stiff tires set to 40psi front and 36psi rear. I adjust my struts to #2 in front (softer) and #4 in rear (stiffer). I control understeer by flicking the tail and using the throttle. If you do not have at least 250bhp, an lsd rear diff will just increase your understeer
