Unsticking stuck caliper

Post by skid542 »

So I finally got all the components I need to swap out my front brakes for turbo's. I started giving the calipers a general go over and TLC whatnot and I can't get the slide pins to slide. Both calipers/brackets are stuck and I'm a bit hesitant to beat on it with anything.

I need to pick up some penetrating oil anyways since one of the hold pin (the one you remove to swing up the caliper) is stuck, which leads me to - what is the oil everyone is always recommending?

So if anyone has any ideas other than the penetrating oil or has experience with this problem I'd appreciate it. Thanks guys.

Edit: Searching revealed that PB Blaster is what I want but I'm still looking for ideas on getting these unstuck. They should be good calipers.

so the part that the caliper slides on is stuck? take it apart with gentle taps from a ball peen hammer, clean the shit out of it until it doesnt stick and you should be good. you should see some of the stuff mechanics do to brakes when they work on it. especially where there is rust.

I've soaked the slide pins with PB and I've let it sit overnight and neither of them will budge when I beat on them. I've sprayed more PB on them and am letting them sit some more and try it again...

Phil, how long did these sit off your 94'?

Seriously? Has anyone ever cracked a caliper or a bracket? How are you hitting it so that it doesn't break something? It seems like I'll either break the braket or the back of the caliper. I'm hitting it pretty hard. Next guess is torch. They'll both need rebuild kits for sure if I do that. It's just soaking in PB for now.

Are you trying to slide the caliper along the pin? Or are you trying to rotate it about the pin? You'll have an easier time doing the latter first.

I would suggest using leverage rather than impact. Wedge a big pipe or bar or something in there to press against, and use your body's weight (and maybe another body's weight), rather than hammering.

It won't slide and the only way it rotates is by the bracket unthreading itself from the pin.

Okay, tomorrow I'll try to mount them and do some prying. As is now I've been working on my kitchen floor... I've got some 2x4's laying around and see what I can do.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

unthread where it threads
where it is stuck, heat with torch, PB blaster, tap tap tap for capillary action and repeat. this helps to work the PB in the stuck joint. then get a BFH and position the piece on 2 blocks of wood so you can drive the pin out the bottom. hit it as hard as you want, unlikely that you can crack it.

So I left them to soak in PB for a week and went at them again today. After about half hour of hammering I got one of them free and loose. The other I had to mount to my car so I could get the locking pin loose. After I got it loose I went to hammering for another 10 min. and got it out too. I've new rubber boots for the pins and need to pick up a fine round wire brush or something to polish the female portion of the slide pin. And if all goes well with my hw and the weather I'll finally have them mounted tomorrow :).
