Got me a new computer today...

Post by subawhatsubawho »

For all my hard work and dedication I was given two new PC's by my company yesterday. They are Compaq EVOs...yes yes..I know..EVO is the enemy. The EVO car might be slow but this thing is fast as hell!!

It only has a 1.6mhz celery chip in it but it has 512mb of pc333 2.5v DDRAM.

What sucked is that I installed a new DVD drive into it and got the stupid message from MS telling me I had to call them and do all that activation key bullshit. She is working good now so I can't complain. They even hooked me up with a sweeeet keyboard and optical mouse. It's all black and silver....not too shabby.

Just curious what everyone esle is running. If you have multiple computer I want to hear about them too.

I have a Dell optiplex that I am using for a personall media server.

No it's new...in the box...they were virgins.

I know they don't make them anymore and I am pretty sure that is why they gave them to me.

I've never bought a PC because I get them handed to me every so often. I have a work bench full of older dells and gateways. I have been using a 700mhz Dell for the longest time because I saw no need to upgrade. I don't play games or watch movies on it. The new EVO got the DVD player because it was free too.

Not too shabby for free....yeah baby...yeah!!

I had a 500mhz I built in '98 or so using 98SE until a couple moths ago. Only problems I ever had were software related. I don't play games or anything either. All that graphic violence desensitizes you to it then pretty soon you're beating the bag out of everybody or climbing the bell tower. None of that violent stuff appeals to me at all. Where is the love, people? Let us hold hands and pray, "May Jesus deliver us from all these fornicators and gays and dark people and baby killers and liberals by smiting them and throwing them to the flames of hell where their bowels will burn in front of their eyes for eternity. Amen."

Now I have the cheapest iBook G4.

Custom ASUS Sonoma 2GHz Pentium M laptop w/NVidia GeForce 6 video chipset, 100GB HDD, DVD burner. (~85 watts @ full performance)

Custom Compaq Presario R3000 2GHz AMD Athlon 64 laptop w/NVidia GeForce 4 video chipset, 60 GB HDD, CD burner/DVD-ROM. (~130 watts @ full performance - this one burns whatever lap it's sitting in)

I have T-Mobile cell phone service with the ability to use the phone as a cellular modem @ 115kbps - works well. I also have a huge collection of games (of course including GTA3 with the real cars patch) that I now have all on my ASUS laptop ready to play any time. I usually don't have time to but it's nice knowing I've got every single one of my old games from DOS, Nintendo, SNES, Genesis, C64, Amiga, Atari, etc. playable in some form of emulator or another (even Wing Commander and Privateer!)

Had to switch to laptops for the cross-country move - the new place is going to generate and store it's own power and have DC run throughout for maximum efficiency.

Before the laptops, I never spent anything on computers - always salvaged parts from the old computer consultation house-call jobs (I was doing that way before Best Buy had a Geek Squad) and built what I needed. But since these systems all use a minimum of 250-300 watts just to power the computer (not to mention the boat-anchor CRT monitor that would likely go with it), they're not feasible to use regularly in an environment with limited power.

Alienware X5DAL-TG2 Motherboard
3 GB of ram
Dual Xeons at 3.06 Ghz
Nvidia Quadro FX 3000
2 huge hard drives (can't remember the capacity)
460 Watt power supply
Dual monitor setup on the way

I do lots of digital painting and some 3D work on it. I have not really tested any of the new games with all the nifty shaders on it, But it runs Battle For Middle Earth at 4x anti-aliasing no problem. Hoping it will run Oblivion just fine, but if not ill have to shell out for the highest end gaming geared Nvidia card (anything else would kinda be like a downgrade)

I have a bunch of D530 and dc5000 HP machines at my office They are all under the EVO line now at HP. They perform pretty good, are quite and the slim form factor makes them fit nice. Might run an AMD for my next at home, seems like they are on top of the performance game right now and I like the concepts they are working on better than Intel.

on another cool note, I built a bunch of machines bassed on the VIA EPIA ITX technology to run the CNC machines in our manufacturing operation. They are pretty damn cool and perform quite well for thier size and therman/power efficiency. No wonder so many people run them as carputers. I'm deff gonna do that when I get the Toyota back together.

Congratulations on your new 'puter. It must be nice to get relatively free stuff. I won't say it's free because I'm sure you had to suffer some to get that perk.

I also picked up a cheap computer today. I was getting sick of dealing with failures in my laptop and took the plunge. I got a HP Pavillion...I know, I know but it seems ok so far. It came with a DVD burner, 3.2 GHZ AMD 64, 512 MB ram, Flat panel display, mouse, keyboard etc., all for the low price of 650 dollars USD. Not too shabby but we'll see I guess. I never realized how hard it could be to find a fucking AC to DC converter for my laptop. The thing is a 150 watt beast, pulling 7.9 A at 19 VDC. Of course not only is that hard to find but the connector is about as proprietary as they come....bastards!!

On the fast computer issue. I thought that Alienware and Vodoo were the top gaming contenders. For my use though, I don't need all the power because games is a 10% hobby for me anymore.

When an HP computer actually goes through quality control, they're pretty good

The only real problems I ever see with them are factory defects (missing parts, software not installed, etc)

They tend to use quality parts these days (asus mainboards, maxtor HD's, etc)

Seems everyone and their mother is selling out to Apple now. I've hated them since they dropped the ][ line and went with Macs, and now I'm forced to work with them on this damn iPod crap. Oh well. Pays the bills. (Heh... I'm a sell-out, I have my price.)

Yeah, the Compaq/HP merger was a deterrent, but when I bought the R3000 laptop it was the only laptop at the time I could find that had a GeForce video chipset in it. This is all-important to me, as it allows the laptop to handle any games or rendering I want to throw at it. I'm happy with both my laptops, especially the Asus.

I guess what I'm trying to say in this last paragraph is that I like to say the word, "laptop."

I've got a Toshiba Protoge' Tablet PC. It's modded.... Well, just a better wireless card... I may get some more ram in her too.

I use an older Micron PC at home. I don't know the specs, and I rarely use it since I have the laptop.

This summer, I may end up getting one of the Apple Macbook Pro's. They are just so easy to use. I never thought I'd own an Apple, the last one I used was the IIe. The Macbook Pro seems pretty legit. 5.6lbs, 1" tall, 14.1" wide, 9.6" deep, 15.1" screen.

Unfortunately, I don't know very much about computers, so I'll be consulting the IT guys at work before a purchase.

today i threw out 35 pcs and 5 notebooks

Post by Bheinen74 »

So, I am at this temp job now for about a month, and they wanted me to throw out a bunch of working desktops and some junk laptops, after I grabbed the harddrives out of course, so they can be magnetized.

The desktop PC's were from around 500- 650 Mhz.
There is a stak of 35 of them around the corner from my office, ready to be picked up by a recycle company.

Earlier this month I threw out around 40 monitors, keyboards, etc., and some old dot Matrix printers. Whew, when the guy I am subbing for gets back from his surgery, he aint gonna be happy that I cleaned his office up... lol

anoyone know someone with an Acer Ferrari Laptop? I've been eyeing one down for a while. My old Dell craptop still does what I need, but the wireless card sticking out and only one USB kinda ticks me off. The Ferrari is still nearly $2k, but talk about a freakin cool toy.

I have an IBM ThinkPad T43p with a 2.0 GHz Pentium-M, 1 GB of RAM, an ATI FireGL V3200, a 14.1" SXGA+ screen, a 60 GB 7200 RPM hard drive, a DVD burner, abg wireless and Bluetooth, an extended battery, a mini-dock, and a 20" LCD. Before that I had a Dell Inspiron XPS Gen 2 (similar specs to the Thinkpad but with a GeForce Go 6800 Ultra), and before that I had a couple of custom-built desktops (a P4 2.4 with 1 GB of RAM, and then a P4 2.8 with 1 GB of RAM, a Radeon 9700 Pro, and a WD Raptor RAID array).

Plus at work I have about 30 P4s and 200 PIIIs sitting in a storage unit. :) My job is refurbishing computers.
