New 91 Legacy SS owner - w/ tranny going, going , going ????

Post by SubaruVanagonguy »

I'm the new owner of a 91 Legacy SS..

Got it reasonable due to tranny problems.

It will only operate in 1st and 3rd gear....will accelerate in 1st and only shift if you let off the gas...then it goes into 3rd. Won't shift into 4th so max speed is limited by 3rd gear rpms.

Any possible fix here....other than a new tranny.

Clean? Flush? Adjust?

You could start by changing the tranny fluid.

Sounds like a typical 4EAT.... I personally think you are headed for a rebuild.

Is it an auto, or 5 speed?

Now that you mentions it I do wonder what it is.

You don't typically flush a MT ;)

Sounds more like a 4EAT to me. If it was a 5MT he'd be complaining about trying to force the thing into gear, not that he has to let off the gas in order for it to shift. You should generally be letting off the gas to change gears in a 5MT...

Damn 4EATs. I could be abusing the rest of my '92 if it werent for them damn clutch packs slipping. Just gotta baby it until I can swap in a 5MT...

Friend of mine around here was always saying he was going to jack my EJ22t and put it in his Vanagon. It'd be quite an upgrade for him. It would fit, too...
