wheel bearing/knuckle compatibility question

Post by jamal »

Well, thanks to that mishap with a curb awhile back, my wheel bearing also needs to be replaced. I'm thinking it will be easier and less expensive to just buy a whole new knuckle with the bearing already in place as opposed to buying a bearing, re-packing it, and having a shop put it in. Whatever I get will probably be newer than the other bearings, so I'll have something to get me around until I buy a new car or something.

I guess the question is, are there any signifcant differences between any of the Subaru knuckles?

From what I can gather, older Imprezas used a different bearing and I wouldn't want one of those, and the 05 sti had it beefed up and my strut wouldn't fit.

Is there anything else that wouldn't fit? Outback stuff maybe? Did axle splines ever change or anything like that? Would I have discovered the answer had I spent more time searching?

thanks.

Front or rear?

The differences I have heard is in the wheel bearing for the rear. The imprezas got ball bearing, while the legacy got tapered roller bearing.

I haven't really heard of much of a difference in the front for the pre WRX models....even on the WRX....I think you could probably use it.

oh, yeah. Front. That's what I was thinking, thanks. I hear the WRX uses a different bearing, which I guess would be better.

Okay time to see what the "world's largest subaru junkyard" in Glendale has and how much they think they're going to jack me for.

edit: Ha ha they want $100 for one out of a 90 Legacy.
