I knew I smelled horseshit...

Seriously, CV grease smells like horseshit to me...

Anyway, I'll let pictures give a clue as to my issue:

And why is this happening?

The straps on THREE different boots have come loose. I have axle grease leaking from THREE different places on BOTH front axles, the inner boot on the driver's and BOTH boots on the passenger's.

Both front axles are from www.cvaxles.com and the driver's side one isn't even 8k miles old yet.

And the driver's side one was replaced about 2 years ago because it also was leaking grease, although much more quickly.

I'm gonna price out Subaru OEM reman axles with my discount tomorrow. I'm actually thinking they'll be close to the $55 price for these. Yes I have lifetime warranty on these axles, but if I have to keep going through this, it's just not worth it.

Hey wait. If the boots aren't tore, and the only spot they are leaking is at the end where the band is, just fix them.

Seriously, you caught it soon enough, there is still plenty of grease in there, from what the picture shows.

Go to NAPA and get a large hose clamp, that will fit around the boot.

Cut the current band off. Place hose clamp in the spot. You dont even have to remove the axle to do this.

The clamp might cost like 5 bucks, but it will last you quite some time, and it will hold better then the clamps that were on there, even better than oem.

I might have to do that, since I was way wrong about OEM reman axles...

$163, for one, my cost. Core is NOT included in that!!! :shock:

Well, I found that NAPA sells brand-new axles for $100, my dealer price is $68.

So I think I'm gonna pick up a set of these soon.

I really can't afford to ghetto-hack anything right now. My schedule has me driving 60 miles a day every weekday except Monday, when I drive almost 100 miles. So I need a car that I can pour miles on like that, and the wagon needs work, so it has to be Patti.

same here, my Jaw Dropped opened after I came back from a days worth of work and I just got gas and reset the Trip... I was already over 100 Miles :shock:

Picked up 2 brand-new axles from Napa, $68 apiece. They're new, so no core charge.

They come with nuts on the end, but I think I'm just gonna use SOA ones, since they're easily available to me.

That's no more money than I paid for cvaxles' reman ones and shipping them to me, then shipping the cores back (although I do realize I got a discount :D)...

you'll be lucky to get 15-20,000 miles on the napa ones. Sure they are guaranteed, but you will be replacing them every year. Subies eat axles, and the ones from napa are not great quality. That is why the ones from subaru are 166 apiece. The Subie ones will last you about 100k miles. Better off paying more in this case.......

These are brand-new Napa axles, not rebuilt.

Not saying you're wrong, just wondering if you understood this part.

Believe me, I'd prefer to use OEM. If I could, I'd use everything OEM. But I can't afford $350 for a set of axles right now.

seems my Inner and outer CV is screwed.. However I might buy a New one this weekend it's $89 for the Front Left, I had the front right done almost a year ago.


Speaking of that Do I need a Cv jount puller?

Hopefully not, but you might, living in a Northern state.

The axle is supposed to slide right in and out of the hub, but rust and corrosion is a bitch :(

Definitely use some axle-spline grease when you put the new axle in to try to prevent this in the future...

I live in Connecticut, the car was sold and Brought in CT.

HOWEVER.. I think it 'might' be a CA model or I might of looked at the ECU Connection the wrong way..

Turns out the outer boot on the driver's axle was indeed torn. Holy shit, what a mess! I've never seen that much grease all over the place. Guess that's what happens when I do mostly highway miles, at 80-90mph.

By the way, the Napa axles came with both axle nuts and spring pins, although I used the Subaru ones I had already.
