Mallory vs MSD
The local performance shop which is gonna be helping me source some stuff for my build has advised me against MSD, and told me to go for Mallory ignition.
The name hasnt come up once on this forum, ever, so Im kind of hesitant about it. Anyone know anything?

that would make me a little weary about the performance shop you're using. Though Mallory is a pretty popular name in groups the pound pavement with domestic V8 iron, to my knowledge they don't make any ignition systems that are designed specificaly for distributorless ignitions. Though some of thier products could probably be made to work, it might be an issue as they are not designed for wasted spark. If your performance shop recommended them, then one of two things is true. Either Mallory decided to get into the modern performance market, or your shop doesn't understand how your engine works.
I'd figure out which one is the case in short order.
If you want an alternative from MSD, Crane makes a DIS unit. Pretty sure Accel does too.

There are more than a few people on this board that have used the DIS-2, myself included, with noticeably results. I credit it with at least part of how clean my 93 ran when it was put to the sniffer with no cats.
If Mallory does make something, then great, but I've never seen any indication that MSD are any less than high quality.

Wow, that's the first I've heard of an MSD ignition failing, Dan.
But, yeah, all these products from MSD, Mallory, Accel, Crane, and whoever are potted. That's the only way they can be sturdy enough.

Old version of the DIS2 (6211) had DIP switches to program and no switchable retard. New version (62112) has dials and adjustable retard that is switch activated. There is also the programable DIS2 (6212) that can be programed with a laptop and actualy alow you to remap the entire ignition curve. I think you might be able to hook it to a MAP sensor too for retard under boost. It's significantly more expensive though.
of course a quick trip to MSDs website would have told you all of that www.msdignition.com

msd dis-2
I am just about to order msd dis-2 for my '91 leggy
specifically pn 62112 from summit $362.88
from what I've read it produces a multiple spark discharge from 3,000 rpm and below and above 3,000 rpm it produces a hotter continuous spark
any comments or recommendations on installation???

So with the DIS2 (PN 6212), you can effectively map all points of the ignition timing curve?
Interesting.....
So with a fuel computer, and a DIS-2 (6212) you could, in theory, completely control both fuel AND timing. Hmm...
Then I'd also assume that you could also modify launch control, and like was mentioned, use a MAP sensor to retard timing on boost...
So you could also build an interface between a fuel controller and the DIS2, so you could control both from one unit, perhaps even overlapping the maps (or at least viewing both at once), and use that interface to store several preset maps for various tunes? You could even tie a wideband controller into the interface and view everything at once.
Interesting.... Very interesting...
Too much work? Probably...

Wow the 6212 costs $480 bucks!
But you can program a LAUNCH timing curve. That's sick.
But good lord that thing sounds amazing!
I bet you could get that thing to work better than most full standalone ECU's! Just let IT control everything, and let the ECU turn on the radiator fans and shit.
