Global warming is to weather as "the magic bullet" is to Kennedy's assasination.
We, as humans, can only wish to be able to control the climate. We have at most 130 years of weather records, much of it innacurate. Such a small amount of information in the scope of this planet's history cannot yield accurate results. It's like taking a national opinion study by using seven people. The weather's gonna change for as long as we live. We're all here for the ride.

In a class a couple years ago, we had a guest lecturer who was reknowned scientist in whatever the study of weather is called(climatology?). after the class, I asked him about the very argument you are making, and he said that humans most definitely are making a small impact on the climate. he explained it to me in detail but of course I dont remember hardly any of what he said.Richard wrote:Global warming is to weather as "the magic bullet" is to Kennedy's assasination.

The climate has been warming since the "Little Ice Age " that reached ist coldest in the late 1600s.
It is now about as warm as it was in the late 1200s, so our existance has not been the "cause" of global warming. Acually, temps have been going up since the end of the last Ice Age some 12,000 years ago.

If someone has convinced themselves that something is true, they'll convince you just by their sincerity. Just ask any former cult member who didn't drink the kool-aid. There was a doctor in South Korea that had everyone amazed with his stem-cell study. A few years later, he admits he's full of beans. Almost EVERYONE was convinced that what he said was true because his presentation was so convincing. There's just as many opinions for global warming as there are against it.
Yes, the planet seems to be getting warmer. Which is causing it to get cooler. With all the influences that take place within and outside Earth's atmosphere, it could ONLY be gas guzzling SUV's. Not the fact that we've been dealing with increased solar output. Not to mention the fact that every time a major volcano erupts, more particulate and gases are emitted into the atmosphere than ALL THE EMISSIONS FROM AUTOMOBILES SINCE THE DAY THEY WERE INVENTED COMBINED. Unchecked coal fires in North Korea? Nah. Giant forest fires in Russia/Siberia? Couldn't be. Its gotta be that GMC.
Maybe the fact that there's more and more humans on this planet every year. All that hot air must be adding to the equation. The polar ice caps are melting. Can anyone explain how all that freshwater ice got there in the first place? It must've been pretty cold when it happened. We'll just blame Haliburton or Carrot Top for now. We have theories, but no proof, of why all of this is happening. Nobody's bothered to write down what the thermometer was at for the last million or two years. If somebody had, wouldn't it be possible that all we're seeing now is just a cycle? Or stuff like this happened all the time? Or did it just start getting warm when Model T's and Studebakers began roaming the Earth?
This planet, as far as I'm concerned, is the single most wonderous system known. Resiliant, regenerative, tolerant, this planet doesn't teeter on what we choose to drive, what we eat, how we feel, who we're at war with, what treaty we sign or don't sign, or even exotic butterflies.
Call me skeptical, but the case hasn't been made well enough for me to say "yes, it's most definitely global warming". I refuse to believe anyone's "truth" or "facts" when there is an underlying motive at play. It is irresponsible to coin a term or phrase to blame for something we don't like or cannot control. (Remember when Hillary used the term "vast right wing conspiracy" to explain why Billy Boy's baby batter ended up on that blue dress?) I prefer the term "climate change" to explain what is happening. We're all here for the ride. We'll all learn to cope with the minor changes as they come. We'll all continue to live our petty lives. (Not to say anyone's life is petty, all life is precious, we're just talking grand scale here.) We'll be ok as long as we don't nuke ourselves into oblivion. And if we do, I'm pretty sure it will just be another phase in Earth's history.

I agree with what you are saying. the doings of humans as a species are insignificant compared to all the changes of the earth through time. though maybe our doings are not insignificant to ourselves. No doubt we will adapt, but at what cost? I dont rule out that in some very small way the things we are doing to the earth are having an effect. especially when it is affirmed by a scientist who knows far more about it than you or I, and I am sure he was well aware of all the arguments regarding increasing temps from the past ice ages and the level at which humans have been polluting. what would you consider to be his "underlying motive" for making an emphatic statement?Richard wrote:We're all here for the ride. what is the difference between the catchphrases "global warming" and "climate change" anyway? if there is a change it is either warming or cooling, eh? after all theyre just words. FWIW known weather records are not the only way of determining past climate trends.
the true implications of our effects on the world remain to be fully understood, and I doubt they will be in our lifetime. Though you cannot deny what we have done to our fresh water supply, the ozone layer, petroleum reserves, etc.
funny how these threads just go crazy off topic huh?

My science teacher three years ago said Global Warming doesn't exist...I believe him

In biblical times the control freaks invented the notion of Original Sin to impose control.
Today's control freaks have taken a natural phenomenon --the warming trends between ice ages--and invented the notion that modern behaviour is "causing" the warming. Then government has a "cause" to impose controls upon society.
The point made in my original post was that the climate is now just as warm as it was in the 13th century, in which case -- that our life style
is "causing" global warming is one of the greatest lies in history.

I don't believe that global warming is a lie. It just hasn't happened all at once, like armageddon, so people believe it is
It's effects may not be terribly apparent now, but we're only lifting pollution regulations, and buying more V8 cars, and that can't be helping.
Who knows what is in store, but not taking care of the earth is a terrible idea, no matter what you "anti-consipracy" theorists believe.

I really wouldn't worry too much about global warming. It's not going to cause any Day after Tomorrow situation.
Do you know why I say this? Because I'm guessing that in 50 years, we won't be polluting the earth anymore with the burning of fossil fuels, because... WE'LL BE OUT OF THEM ENTIRELY!
I've read in more than one place that we'll have used 50% of the known resources of petroluem by 2012 or something like that. Figure in the fact that we keep growing in numbers and our rate of consumption of petroleum has to increase with it, we're going to run out within the next century, for 100% sure.

^^^very true, I think we'll run out before we can seriously pollute the earth...however, the oil resources seem to be "replenished" in a sense, because Alberta Canada has newly discovered oil reserves that overshadow Saudi Arabia. However, I don't think that's necessarily a good thing...
