Finally Doggin....

Post by BAC5.2 »

Finally put together the tranny last night. Most of it anyway. Both shafts are built, just gotta fit it all back together.

I'll take a pic or two when I go to the shop today.

To give a hint, my new first gear is not only straight cut, but is nearly twice as wide as stock. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th are the same way.

I'm giddy like a school girl!

And here we go. A comparison.

The Turbo Legacy STOCK 1st gear is in my hand. My new first gear is the larger one. The backs of the gears are lined up so they are even.

This is going to be one loud mother. Straight cut. No synchro's. Just clackity-clack through the gears and spinning all 4 at will.

Awesome! That's going to be sick.

BTW I'm supposed to swing by the shop tomorrow at 8am. I'll take a peek at your gears if they're lying around. Also, I'd be happy to get that seat out of your way if there is actually some way for me to get it at 8am-9am (at the shop or your house - either way). You'll probably be asleep or at class, but hey I figured I'd give it a shot.

Built in my stock 94 Legacy Turbo case. I'll be pulling it apart again this summer to install some billet shift forks.

cool.

everyone says they think they are hard to drive and really loud.

in the ones that i have driven and ridden in i didnt think that was the case at all. in fact it was downright fun!

sure you have to pay a bit more attention and shift like you mean it but it wasnt hard.

what i did find hard to drive was a high compression motor golf w/a unsprung 4 puck racing clutch. stalled that sunofabitch at least 3 times the first time i drove it.

I drove a civic with a Type-R motor and a 4-puck unsprung around for a day. That shit was just crazy. I drove my bosses WRX with a sprung 4-puck and a synchro 1-4 set quite a bit when he had that setup. That was fun. I actually would love to have a 4 puck with a sprung hub in the Legacy.

I've yet to run into anything I can't drive. A dogbox will be no problem. They take confidence in ability and mechanics. That's all. That, and you have to shift as fast as you possibly can, if you don't want to double clutch or pussy foot around.

so you pretty much HAVE to bang every shift? cool
why not throw the billet forks in now, seeing as how weak the stock ones are to hard shifts. it sure would suck to have a piece of shift fork cause some trouble. ;-)

How's the rebuild frequency on those boxes, regarding dog wear, etc?

I'm debating between a WRX box with PPG gears, and a STI 6MT for my RS.

WRX box with PPG gears definately. 6-speed has horrible ratios for everything but auto-x.

There shouldn't be any rebuild frequency on a PPG dogbox. You HAVE to use good fluid, but that's about it. We've had some handling 650+whp all day long without any problem.

Dog is not a solution for a daily driven car IMO. Unless your a glutton for punishment like me.

I must say, and I'll get video, a straight cut synchro box is VERY VERY loud in an SS for some reason. I can't hear my exhaust at all inside the car, and my exhaust is LOUD! I love it though. It sounds killer and you can easily have a conversation overtop of it. Above 3500 or 4000 RPM, though, it's quite different. Kind of loud, and almost too loud for normal tone conversation.

My best friend qualified my car as "obnoxious to your average person"

I want one :D

so, if I send you the 5spd out of my Legacy L, you'll put a 1-4 straight cut dog set in, and keep the stock 4.111:1 differentials?

I want shift forks changed out too, I'll probably break them.

I really want to know a ball park price, Phil. Sounds great.

My car is already loud from lack of interior from all the tire noise, so another noise wont be bad. :D

You're just going to get used to shifting up to 5th.

here is a answer to the price question for the PPG gear sets from another thread:
BAC5.2 wrote: Prices?

Sure.

Note: Prices subject to change based on exchange rate and production costs. Prices can change daily.

1-2 straight cut or helical synchro gearset. $2000 for the gears.

The 1-4 set (helical or straight cut) is $3500.

Often times, all of the synchros will be replaced (it's a good idea to do it). That's about $250 to $270.

There's about $100 in transmission install parts (shims, gasket, misc other stuff).

Then there is shipping.

Frankly, the best idea is to find a known good stock WRX unit. Then we won't have to worry about the front diff being blown or anything.

That's about the cost right there.

Various other charges can occur, and every tranny is subject to circumstantial charges. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

That about covers it I think.

That price quote is for a synchro set. The dog sets are a bit more money for several reasons. More parts needed, gears themselves are more expensive.

I got the dogbox installed last night.

Ungodly how fast you can shift. I only beat it up a little, but good lord can you shift fast. Downshifting to 1st gear at 30mph with a snap of the fingers.

I might sell this dogbox in favor of something a little more oriented for what I am looking to do.

Anyone interested?

Definately not bored, just want something a little different than what I have.

I dunno, probably around $3500 or so?
