Swapped brake setups???
I was just doing a little research on what my future brake mods might be and I was wondering what everybody else is running. Right now I have stock rear and wrx calipers/rotors up front. As far as I know the pads are just normal cheapos.
I was planning on maybe putting some H6 rear calipers/rotors on my car, but is it really worth it? Or would I be better off getting a prop valve and some good pads? I really want to go to as many track events as possible, so I want something track worth but streetable to.
So what is everyone else running on their cars??

Well, proper brake bias, along with tires, is the most important factor in stopping distance. After that you need to worry about the heat capacity and cooling of the system. WRX fronts are certainly an increase in heat capacity, but it will increase stopping distances because the rear tires will do less than their share of stopping.
I don't particularily like the idea of mixing pads because bias will change depending on pad temperature. If you're tracking the car, you should get some good (race) pads anyway.
On the other hand if you're going to the track a lot it might not be a bad idea to pick up some R-comp tires. The added grip might come close to balancing out the forward bias of just WRX fronts.
I wanted bigger front brakes so I bought WRX stuff. To even out the bias I'm going with H6 rears. Unfortunately it's all sitting in the corner right now because I'm too broke to buy the rest of the stuff I need. I don't drive that much these days anyway. It's a good and inexpensive way to increase the heat capacity of the brake system and there are tons of pads available for the setup.
Given the type of driving I do (not on a track), all this probably isn't necessary, but there don't seem to be a whole lot of pad choices for the stock brakes. Also I have a sticky caliper and wanted bigger brakes.

A guy overhere placed H6 brakes under his 93 wagon. Works great, even on the track
The size of the H6 discs is much bigger than the WRX discs. That is a big advantage!
And, always use original Subaru brake pads, the are much more durable than other ones!
One "problem": H6 at the front means 17" wheels and at the back 16" minimum!

93forestpearl, that looks like a good setup, what is on the rear??
You've got a gnarly rust problem too...

Jeez this place really needs an image posting FAQ
As for brake pads, OEM is fine for regular driving, but there are many pads with higher temperature ratings that are more suited to light track use.
Well, no, H6 doesn't require 17" wheels. The "H6" actually refers to the rear brakes from any 00-04 Legacy, which are single piston non-vented 11.3" brakes (and are much bigger than most other Subaru rears). The brakes on the front of those cars are the 11.4" brakes on the WRX which do fit under the 16" wheels.SP-Boxer wrote:A guy overhere placed H6 brakes under his 93 wagon. I have turbo Bradi's that are slotted and cyro-treated running Mintex pads in the rear and the front is standard turbo setup with OE pads. My bias is about perfect as I've had all 4 tires lock first in different situations. My 70-0 is well within 100 ft. I couldn't be happier though I will upgrade to slotted and cyro'd with a more agressive pad but until I have that money available I can certaintly make do with what I have

Stock Legacy L setup in the rear at the moment. I'll convert to Turbo rear brakes this summer as I have a line on a good deal on calipers and brackets. I wanna get some better rotors if I can find them. Right now I'm concentrating on getting my motor together. Once the suspension, brakes and driveline are all buttoned up, bodywork will the last step. But hey, I kinda like the rusty sleeper factor

turbo front calipers/rotors, legacy wagon rear calipers (for brake bias), and a wagon valve. Currently running axxis ultimates.
I could tell a difference between the sedan rear calipers and the wagon ones, but only when i was really wrangling the car on familiar turf. Beyond that, its just academic, unless you're racing. I've cooked these brakes twice going downhill, but i don't have to worry about it, these pads give some warning.
I did a pretty decent writeup on them in the reviews, iirc

In Europe H6 brakes mean: Brakes from a 3.0l Legacy type IV. And in front, you need 17"! And the discs at the back are vented discs overhere! (Only 3.0 has vented discs at the back!)jamal wrote:Jeez this place really needs an image posting FAQ

Experience with the OEM brakepads at the Nordschleiffe is great! Think about it, these brakes are ment for a car that weights over 1500kg and has 245bhp
