shifter locked up

Post by dzx »

the other evening i was turning around in my driveway, went to stick it in first and all of a sudden I couldn't change gears anymore or move the shifter. From what I can tell, I think it's stuck in 3rd or 4th but I dont really know. I got under the car and looked at it and banged it a little but it doesn't look like anything is wrong there. Has anybody else had this happen or have any ideas as to what it could be?

It did this before a couple years ago but it freed up after a couple days.

From my Haynes manual:

Difficulty in engaing gears:

Clutch not releasing.
Loose, damaged, or misadjusted shift linkage.

Clutch fails to release:

Freeplay incorrectly adjusted.
Clutch contaminated with oil.
Clutch disc warped, distorted or otherwise damanged.
Diaphragm spring fatigued.
Leakage of fluid from clutch hydraulic system.
Air in clutch hydraulic system.
Insufficient pedal stroke.
Piston seal in master or release cylindeer deformed or damaged.
Lack of grease on pilot bearing.

My uneducated hunch is that it's either the oil or grease problems or air in the hydraulic system (do our cars even have hydraulic clutches?), because you said the problem goes away. So the pilot bearing is getting re-lubricated somehow, or the oil is coming off the clutch disc, or the air bleeds itself. The other stuff I can't really see fixing itself.

I took the tranny out today and tore into it. The shift fork was broken again and there were two rectangular pieces from part of the synchro assembly stuck to the magnetic plug. I'll be replacing the fork tomorrow and hopefully have it back into the car by tomorrow night.

Figures. Forks are easy to replace though. You should get some billet forks, espically since you keep breaking them.

I haven't been able to find any. I think it was from when I let one of my friends drive my car recently and he was just slamming gears before I had a chance to tell him not to. He was really ripping them.

Yeah, I really need to stop letting other people drive my car. Right now my gf has it. She called and bitched about her arms hurting from the lack of power steering. I could probably use some billet forks soon, I'm going to be throwing in a junkyard tranny and pulling mine and completely rebuilding it soon.

She called you JUST to tell you that HER arms hurt because she's driving YOUR car? Wow. I'd pull the doctor reasoning. "Hurts to drive my car? Don't drive it anymore then."

Let me know. I can get you forks.

So we were driving the other day and there was a little vibration, then all of sudden all 4 wheels locked up and we slid about 30 ft. Some how the car managed to slip into reverse while it was still in third. I'm sure I got all the interlock pins back into the rods but something must have fallen out. I got a junkyard transmission for 40 dollars and that is in the car for now. Hopefully when I open up the RS tranny, nothing is too tore up and it can be rebuilt.

It went into reverse randomly?

Odd. The only way that could happen, is if you mess up the interlock pins so that the 5/R rod can move while the 3/4 rod is engaged.

That's tough to get into reverse. The vibration was the reverse synchro trying to stop the input shaft from moving. Ouch. That's at least toast.

I think that's gotta be the only thing that could have happened.

pull in save down in denver. They have a special on transmissions every 2nd week of the month? 29.99 for any transmission plus 10 dollar core charge. Total came to 44.xx and the place is really nice. They had about 5 legacy's when I was there. None of them had really been touched. It's down off of Peoria st. We were at the junkyard on federal pulling a transmission that they wanted 125 for and we got to talking to two older asian men and they told us to check the place out. Turns out they had a turbo legacy too, I saw it in the parking lot but was confused because the back tail lights said Ls on them.

Yeah, it sucks about the transmission, hopefully i can find time to open it up soon. My gf is getting a car too so I should be able to take my car out of action for a while and fix everything that's wrong with it.
