Shift gate

Post by Splinter »

Well I start the 5MT swap in 3 days

Ive decided Im not gonna put on that fugly rubber boot. Im either gonna try and snag a leather one from the wreckers or just leave it open

I think it'd be very, very cool to get a shift gate made though. There's a few places in town with waterjet routers, Id just need to know the measurements. How would I go about doing this?

I'd probablt get it cut from polished aluminum

Ummm...I think you would need a non-stock shifter, as the factory one is pretty damned wide.

Yeah, I suggested a shift gate in the Boot thread (half joking), but yesterday I was feeling the shifter through the boot and its quite wide, so a custom shifter would be a must for a gate.

But keep in mind that a gate will probably slow down your shifting, in fact thats exactly why some cars have them... save the tranny.

If I were gonna build one I think I would make the actual gate part the rubs on the shifter out of something slippery like UHMW and then put a thin aluminum plate on top to dress it up (brushed or satin black paint... no bling for me). With generous corner radiuses I dont think my shift speed would be compromised to badly, but then I'm not a real gear jammer anyway (225,000 mile syncros wont allow it), I tend to follow the patten with my hand movments.

I may have to fire up the mill and see what I can do. :D

What about a really wide gate with soft rubber seals?

Lemme knock something up in psp to show what I mean

I hate to resurrect this thread... but I love this idea. I'd much rather have a gate than a boot. I'm going to talk to some shop owners around here to see if they have ideas.

You would definitely need a thinner shift rod as the spacing would be real thin. I like the idea of the Volvo track ball myself.

Just replying to express my interest in a shift gate (sorry to resurrect)... I should be able to find someone to fab one up for me if I had measurements. Splinter's idea is great, too.

Nice civic bible comment, but yeah you need to convert your measurements of your proposed gate to CNC compatible file format.... grab some software and sketch it up and convert it to a file format the machine shop/water jet/laser can use.

I'm pretty rusty on file format but this site sums things up nicely.
