Remote trunk release

Post by ohwee »

I want to add a trunk release to my existing car alarm/starter. I bought a generic aftermarket trunk release kit. The actuator seems to be overly large and I don't see where or how it could possibly be installed.

Has anyone done this already or have any recommendations?

Thanks!

I managed to get the electric trunk release installed so I thought I'd share what I did...

parts:
- universal trunk release kit, similar to this: http://www.autotoys.com/x/cust/product. ... 16&cat=107
- bicycle front brake cable and sheath
- misc. screws

The hardware that came with the kit didn't provide a good way to attach the cable to the trunk lock-release lever. I opted for a front brake cable from a junked bicycle so that I could use the lead 'stopper' to pull/engage the lever.

I enlarged the slot on the trunk release lever where the cables are held in. I used a drill with a small bit. I had intended to make a separate hole for the additional cable however it turned into a larger slot. Works fine.

I secured the brake cable parallel with/to the stock cable using small tie wraps.

I mounted the solenoid beneath the rear right tailight using the supplied mounting bracket. The trunk liner nicely clears the solenoid in that position. I placed a chunk of bicycle tire tube between the solenoid and the car body... it helped to hold it securely in place and prevent scratching.

I cut the solenoid and bicycle cables to size and joined them together using the supplied hardware. The location of the join makes it really easy to adjust.

It works great and adds some weight in the back for the winter!
