Hello all,
Been using your site for info for a while now and really appreciate the resource. I couldn't find what I was looking for though after the coged timing belt idler failed on my 93 Legacy wagon (auto trans, 2.2 n/a - 245,000 miles!)
I figured I had snaped the belt, but this is what I found under the covers:
http://myweb.stedwards.edu/tonyc/view.php?gid=6&phid=5
http://myweb.stedwards.edu/tonyc/view.php?gid=6&phid=6
ball bearings and shavings everywhere:
http://myweb.stedwards.edu/tonyc/view.php?gid=6&phid=7
here you can see where some superheated ball bearings loged themselves into the timing covers, and looks like at least one burned its way through.

Anway, I looked and couldn't really find how I am supposed to reset the cam timing after a belt failure? Do I just need to set the crank cog to TDC on #1 and then align the cam pullies so the notches line up, and then put the new belt on while counting the right number of ribs? Or am I missing something?
And one last thing, anyone know of a good place to get a new set of timing covers, or at least a good used set, as these got pretty hosed during this whole mess.
Thanks for the help,
Tony

your new belt should have marks on it, just line the marks up with the marks on the cam and crank cogs and you're set. they only line up one way. it's the marks, not the arrows, ignore the arrows.

Happened to a legacy that I was thinking of buying. It was a complete disaster.

As for the tbelt, yeah just align the marks. These pics may help, as well as the factory scans.

Check out my last post in the following thread:

Look for the links to the End Wrench articles. Between those and the FSM Scans you'll have everything you need.
For belt covers look up blackbart, he's good at finding good condition used parts. He has fair prices and good shipping.

Hey guys, just wanted to say thanks for the help, I was able to get a good set of used covers from a member here to replace my cracked pieces, and the FSM scans and other pics made the process go very smooth.
Buttoned her up last night and she fired right up on the first crank, now its time to replace that leaky pan gasket!
Thanks again,
Tony
