Hello all, I am brand new here and a new Subaru owner. I have a 1991 Legacy L AWD wagon. It is an automatic with 225k miles. I am having a problem that I hope you can help with.
The car makes a loud clanging noise from underneath while driving. My friend and I put the car up on 4 jack stands and accelerated up to 60+ mph. The noise definitely sounds like it is coming from the driveshaft. I can't tell if it's the front or middle u joints (if that's what you call them on a Subaru).
Has anyone else had this problem? How likely is the driveshaft to fail if I continue to drive it like this?
I was going to rotate the drive shaft at the middle joint, but of course, I don't have the proper tools. I can't seem to get a 12mm socket on the bolt head side, nor do I have a slim enough wrench.
I hope the experience of the members here can help me as I am planning at 1200 mile trip with this car this Thursday.
Thanks,
Dale
Undercarriage noise--possibly driveshaft?

is it doing it all the time or just when you turn? if its turning only you may be experiancing torque bind ( do a search on it, there is a ton of information on it out there )
also check the carrier bearing ( where the driveshaft bolts to the tunnel about midway ) if that is bad it could do what you are talking about.
