My current car is just about to die, so it's time for me to get another before I head back to college next week. I'm planning to spend up to $4,000 for a mid-90's Legacy or Impreza. I'd like one with a turbo, but it's not something I'd require. From reading around online, I've gathered that the 2.5L engines have weak head gaskets while the 2.2L is better.
1) What other common problems to these cars have?
2) If the car has a turbo, anything related to that I should check?
3) What would be considered high mileage for the boxer engines?
4) What's the life of the manual / automatic transmission before they typically have issues?
Searching around online and Subaru friends, there are a few cars that seem to be good candidates. Thoughts on them?
A) 1997 Outback Sport for $2500. 144K miles. Says, "clutch/transmission starting to make noise", so I'd obviously have to get some work done. Don't know any more details.
B) 1994 Legacy turbo wagon with a bad reverse gear. A local Subaru enthusiast would replace it and sell the car for $3700.
C) 1992 Legacy/Outback Turbo with no engine for $700. Then have a local shop put in a EJ20G and keep the stock auto tranny (for now), where I was quoted $1700.
