what causes this noise?

'94 legacy wagon AWD with frozen viscious coupling.

This car makes a noise on acceleration, coast but not during engine breaking. The could if a bering like whiring.

Which bearing?

It also has occasional smells of gear oil on the exhaust and a little splash onthe tranny but no drips on the driveway. Where to look?
