Easy brake question

Post by realfinn »

Just replacing the brakes on the 93 for the first time. On other cars that I have replaced the brakes on new shims come with the brake pads. But when I bought the el cheapo wearever silvers there were no shims or plates...just the pads. The old pads on the car has shims. Should I reuse the old shims and clips or put the pads on with out them? Not sure that its a very big deal...

You need to use the clips....as for the shims....I think they cause more noise....but that's me.

You can reuse them if you want.

if you have a nice layer of grease between the pad and the shim it shouldn't be a problem. I think you should use them if possible- it provides a layer of heat insulation to the caliper/fluid and our brakes aren't all that big. I've been thinking about buying a sheet of titanium on e-bay and making shims.

Thanks guys.

Give www.mcmaster.com a look for material to make your own shims. Sometimes there cheap...sometimes there not. But its safer than ebay.

I'm not sure that the shims would make them drag when you turn. The Shims are supposedly there to reduce noise. If the brakes are the same as the BC legacy then I would see if the pad moves (somewhat) freely on the end clips.
