Quick question

Post by Redlined »

Decided to look at another subie.

went and looked at this car http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/car/224148962.html

Started good. ran good. looked pretty good. had all the frills.

but

between about 5mph and 10 mph it made a noise like i was driving on a flat tire and the shift handle shook body shook a tad. Quieted after that. did NOT do it in reverse. went upto 45 and it rode rock steady.

Guy said it had to do with the Ride hight control.

Felt to me like the drive shaft was unbalanced. bad universal joint or something.

Walked away with a promiss of calling him back tonight.

any idea what could be the issue? last thing I need is to spend a chunk of dough on a car that needs another chunk of dough dropped into it.

My legacy did the same thing when I had a CV shaft go bad. However, mine didn't shake til about 35 mph, and after that it would get worse. It felt like a flat, and the shifter and entire car would shake. I replaced it and it went away. Not sure why you'd see it the other way around, so possibly not axles?

Either way, if you could look at the axles, check for torn boots, get a good hand on them and shake them, see if they feel worn. Might find something out.

Good Luck.
