~'92 n/a legacy 2.2 auto into '95 impreza 2.2 auto

my brother bought a cheapo '95 impreza with a bad motor. we have access to an entire ~'92/93 n/a legacy.

I'd like to just pull the engine/tranny from both, and put the legacy stuff in the impreza.

so far, what I've found is that the legacy is most likely a 3.9:1 final drive, and the impreza is a 4.11:1 final drive (can anyone verify this for me, my sources are WEAK search hits on various boards)

does anyone know if I can just keep the impreza axles and have them fit on the legacy transmission?

ideally, I'd like to get out of this as simply as possible, which seems to be.. pull engine/tranny/rear diff from impreza and legacy. put legacy stuff in impreza

does anyone know which driveshaft I should use?

which axles?

will I be able to plug the ECU connector from the impreza into the engine harness of the legacy and have it work? (the imp has a strange almost OBDII kinda setup)

anything I'm forgetting?

just went and picked up the donor legacy last night..

rethinking this.. it seems more likely to be a quick job if we just swap motors... any thoughts on this?

I've never had an engine separated from an auto tranny, so any words of wisdom would be appreciated

The axles should be interchangable.

The engine electrical harnesses will most likely be different.

The solution is to swap intake manifolds....assuming the bolt pattern is the same between the legacy & impreza heads.

You need to remove the flex plate bolts which have to be accessed from that little opening in the engine bell housing. A ratcheting wrench helps a lot. Also, make sure that the torque converter does not pull out of the transmission, and is fully locked/seated when putting things back together.

remove flex plate bolts before removing engine, I'm assuming?

I'm new to this autotranny thing  :-D

engine is ready to come out of the legacy, just have to drain the coolant and oil, take out the last couple bellhousing bolts, and unhook the motor mounts

that will probably get done today after work, and then this coming week I have a break from school so i will get the impreza stripped out as well

there is a post in the classified section regarding me parting out the rest of the legacy

Just swap the impreza intake manifold over to the legacy engine to be sure everything is plug and play. Enojy :)
