Need some help......

Post by Oldyota83 »

Alright..... The passenger side CV joint is going out on my 93 legacy wagon.. The boot is split and it is now "hopping" "vibrating" the front right side... I've been working on cars for years now, but this is my first Subaru. Are there any good write ups for replacing a Half Shaft for this car..... And are the reman'd shafts decent or are they junk? Thanks in advance,

The Oldyota

Welcome to the board.

There may be a write-up or two around. I don't have any direct links, but you may find something if you search.

As for replacing the axle, it's pretty straight forward. You should be able to remove the bolt securing anti-sway bar link to the lower A-arm, and then remove the front-most bolt holding the lower A-arm to the crossmember. This should give you enough slack to slide the axle off the axle stub on the transmission.

The roll pins on the axle need to be installed & removed from the end of the axle that is chamfered, it should make sense when you look at the axle. I believe the axle nut size is 32mm. Someone should correct me if I'm wrong.

I've had good reman'd axles, and one or two that I sent back because they didn't feel right, or they leaked. So it's your call, but I believe they're a lot cheaper then new ones.

Also, one quick note. The FWD cars have larger diameter front shafts then the AWD cars. It shouldn't matter if you use an AWD front shaft, but if you go to a parts store and the question comes up....that's the difference between the AWD & FWD axles. They are interchangable....the diameter is just different.

So after reading through the page alittle, I see that the half shafts are a pretty common problem.... Is there tech page on this board regarding common write-ups or can anyone direct me to one... For some reason I love to read about the job I'm going to do when haven't done it before.... It sounds very easy and I guess I'm being a little apprehensive on this job.... Thanks again.......
