(Changing Title to:) VF8 info needed!

Post by Imprezive »

I've been looking for info on the IHI vf8 turbo and cannot find any website with the info I need. So far I can only speculate the following:

It is a little bit "smaller" than a TD05
It has a P18 Exhaust Housing
It is bigger than the vf11, vf10, TD04
It is about the same size as teh vf12, although I have heard the vf12 has a P20 exhaust housing, then I read the VF8 had the P20, in the end I believe the VF8 has the P18 and the vf12 the P20???

Sooooo, does anyone have a compressor map or know where I can find one? How about the Trim, A/R, CFM/lb/min??? I am surprised with the lack of information on rslibertyclub and the MRT forums. But then again, maybe I just need a lesson on entering key search words???

If anyone could help me out that would be awesome!

Im wondering the same things you are. For my build, I want a setup that will make full boost by 3.5-4k. When I was looking up the VF22 I read that it doesnt make full boost until almost 5k, but when it does, its a crazy turbo. I then looked at the VF30 and 34, and I liked the 34 since it will perform the same as the 30, but will spool a little quicker.
So I cant wait to see what people post about their setups.

fully spooled at 5k??!? Thats gotta be wrong, unless they are running it on a 1.8L or somethin!

Think of it like this, wrx owners have a 2.0L and we have a 2.2L engine, so our engines should be able to acheive spoolup earlier than a wrx.

I've read that it can be fully spooled anywhere from 3600rpm (JSC Speed website) to around 4000rpm (NASIOC)

I can't back up my thinking with math or anything but I'd assume our engines would have it spooled somewhere around 3300-3400 which is pretty good. And in the end its only a difference of ~300rpm so who cares?

I have the vf 34 on my currently parked wagon due to a bad tranny. I basically had my ebc set to be giving me 15lbs of boost with saab ic ces exhaust vrg3 fcd and completely rebuilt long block, with 3 angle valve job on the heads and a little port & polish but not much due to it not needing it according to flow bench results the guy saw. The car ran awesome til the tranny started slipping.

Just to give you an idea of what a vf34 will do.

I can tell you that the vf12 does have a P20 exhaust housing.

My vf8 has the 20-R (it isn't actually a P20 housing, maybe it is the same size, but it is stamped as a 20-R) as well. I think the big difference was the spoolup time for the vf8 and vf12. They are pretty much the same turbo, but I think the vf12 had different bearings or something that allowed it to spool up faster. That is my understanding, but that might not be completely true. I had heard that the vf8 had the 18-R exhaust housing, but mine has the 20-R. The person I bought it from though mentioned that the vf8 he sold me was basically a hybrid of some other turbos. I had shrugged it off to his understanding of what the vf8 was, and that he was just trying to explain the power output of the vf8. Maybe it was modified to have the 20-R housing, but most vf8's came with the p18. I'm really not sure.

Thawa's Turbo information post also has information on a vf8 with a 20-R housing.

I wish there were some solid numbers I could go by. I've heard that the VF8 has the 20R housing which isn't the same as a P20, it is smaller. Think about it, why put a P20 housing on such a small compressor???

This is lame. Do I snag the VF8 or keep looking for something bigger?

The vf8 is not that small, really. You'll notice a definite improvement. I'm only running 15 psi with it, and it definitely turned my car into another animal.

It is a good stepping stone, but the Aussies have said that 17 pounds on the vf8 is fun, but you will be maxing out it's potential, if not passing it's efficiency. I haven't seen any info to back it up, but they said you'll see an improvement with a TD05 or vf12.

What exactly are you looking for? If you want tons of power on the top end, go for a vf22 or some such thing. If you want quick spooling, go for a vf23. (Kelley from perfection mortorsports was seeing lots of power with a tune on an autronic ecu and a vf23). If you want something that will just fit in fairly easily without too much work, go for a vf12 or a TD05. Honestly, though. You will not be disappointed with the vf8. I'm really not sure if the difference is THAT great. A guy that rode in an STI rode in my car the next week, and he said that my car is not THAT much slower, at least it didn't feel that way.

Any of those turbo upgrades will be able to net you 200 whp I believe. With a 20% loss in drivetrain, you'll need to achieve 250 chp, and that should be doable with any one of those turbos. Phil (BAC5.2) was over 200 whp with the TD05 at 16 psi, and his torque was leaps above his hp.

Ok, sorry - the VF12 has a 20-R exhaust housing not a P20 as I stated earlier. Just to clarify.

So 555 what are running for EM with the 440 injectors and 20psi? That sounds fun.

None :D

I just picked up a Perfect Power though, so I guess a Perfect Power?

Yeah...I must caution all of you about doing that...my results are most certainly not typical...and I am always watching/feeling for knock while running the motor that hard...

You also have the 440cc injectors. Dang, 20 psi, I can only imagine. I know how much faster my car is now, and how much faster it was at 17.5 psi. I can only imagine what 2.5 more psi would do.

I can't wait until I get my Perfect Power and Wideband in so I can actually tune it...because it is running pretty rich, and I bet I can get another 20hp down low just from pulling some fuel in the lower RPMs and Load Ranges.

Mad stuff. Just putting in the VF-8 alone and not touching the boost would probably be enough for me.

I love my vf8 aswell. Can't wait for more Psi! It's a great little turbo with almost no lag. I am using it on my EJ20G swap right now.

that vf8 would be nice, but the thing is its a rather old turbo w/ an old bearing design.

So? For me they're a cheaper alternative to a TD05 which aren't as common and a lot more expensive. I asked my wrecker how much they go for and he said around $500 NZD IF he has one. Going brand new from the dealer I'd be looking at possibly 3-4x more. For the VF-8, I'm looking to pay less than 1/2 that and they are common as chips.
Also a guy at work has an RS with a TD05 and that thing is running so badly he doesn't even want to bother fixing it anymore and that's put me off.
Later on down the line I'll be upgrading to a '92 RS ECU and buy a set of injectors someone at work is happy to sell. These injectors are from a 3.0 single turbo Supra too!
