Most cost effective tranny for 16g SS?

Post by shemoves »

As the title states...as nice as it'd be do have a set of PPG gears, money matters. 'Technically,' I could just get another SS 5mt and lower the boost...but that kinda defeats the purpose of a 16g.

So, I don't need it to be some monster that can hold 500 whp, but it'd be nice to not have to worry about it. I'd say power handling in the 275whp range should be fine, but I am more than open to suggestions.

Oh yea, I am on a budget of about 'as cheap as possible.'

My votes for a 5sp from a NA (should be easy enough to find and cheap). Be nice to it and save your pennies for a dog box or 6sp swap.

What happened to the previous tranny?

There isn't a factory tranny that will hold 275whp reliably, unless it's a 6-speed. But with the 6-speed, you have horrible gear ratios for drag racing. Sorry.

yah...I've got that, and I it should handle the power as the V.2 STis had about 265 or 275 hp stock...it's just such short gearing. Fun to drive, but I'd prefer the longer gears for this car. So, I was considering selling the JDM RA tranny and trying to find something strong enough with a 3.9 Final.

Just swap to a 3.9 final. If you've got the OE tranny still, take it to a tranny shop and have them swap the ring and pinion shaft for you. Then do the same with the rear diff (or use the stock rear diff for that matter).

Personally.....I'd just drive the stock tranny until is grenades and go from there.

I'm assuming you already have a 5MT, however I may be wrong.....
