Hello Everyone,
I have not really posted here, since this group started I have been
pretty busy studying for the EIT (Engineering in Training) Exam (on
Saturday). Anyway, I have a '92 Legacy L (great car) that I bought
in February 2000. I have a small webpage with some picts and mods:
http://members.tripod.com/p.e.markie/index.htm
You guys are the most knowledgeable group about the 1990-1994 Legacy,
I am still relatively new to Subaru but I am learning fast.
I just noticed this and I thought some of you may be able to answer
my questions (sorry about the length-I also posted at The Ultimate
Subaru Message Board):
Well, I saw grease on my left front Subaru mag again today. So, upon
further inspection, I notice that the new outer left CV boot that I
had put on in late June is leaking. I do not see a tear, but there is
a ton of grease on the inside of the rim and everywhere. Maybe it
wasn't tight enough? Could the change in weather have something to do
with this? Or is it just a mistake made by the guy who put the boot
on?
Well, I decided to inspect the other boots while I'm at it. The other
outer one on ther right wheel is fine, good, that one was replaced in
Jan 1999 by the previous owner. I get to the inner ones, left fine,
right, uh-oh. Cracked and looks like it's been that way for awhile, I
didn't notice it before. I looked over it last time I changed my oil
(around mid-August) and it was fine. I am due for another oil change
soon as well.
So, I guess I need to take the car back to the mechanic (CV Boots are
one thing that I do not do myself). So should they fix the left front
outer boot because they installed it around four monthes ago or am I
S.O.L. on this?
Unfortunately, as it happens often when a used car changes hands,
lies were told or there was a misunderstanding. I could have sworn
that the previous owner said he had replaced 3 cv boots in January
1999. Well, the reciept tells a different story (of course I missed
this), only the right outer boot was replaced. Oh well, I guess I
shouldn't complain, this is the only real problem that I have had
with the car, cv boots seem to wear out on all front wheel drive cars.
How long are the CV boots supposed to last? Or is that a function of
weather and driving conditions? Unfortunately, this is one part of
the car that I do not know alot about. I know what cv joints do, but
couldn't they seal them with something a little more durable? Thanks
in advance to anyone that answers my questions, helps out, or
relates.

I had to replace one on my 90L.

Grrr...CV Boots Yet Again on My '92 Legacy
Hi Paul-just a little info from experience-I have a `92 also & when the
stock exhaust was in place, the i/s frt c/v boots were exposed to the
exhaust pipe on one side & the primary cat on the other. Mucho heat & not
good for rubber parts; still they lasted about 100k. If you don`t hit or
scrape anything, yours should last as long. Now the advice: use Subie boots
only & have a COMPETENT tech do the install-your problem sounds like an
incorrect install-take it back & get a redo! Also, replace inner & outer per
axle at the same time & try to do the frts. together (if $ permits). If you
have AWD, just keep an eye on the rears as they tend to wear less. Keep in
mind, ALL rubber components will crack & dry over time! Hope this helped, as
I`ve got 145k on mine & it`s `LIKE A ROCK`!-ROD
