the button on the very front of the shifter assembly. what is it and what does it do?

It is for releasing the shifter without the key. Shiftlock Defeat is what I call it, idk what the proper term is though.

Yup. That's exactly what it is. Don't have the key and want to put the car in neutral? Use that button.
