EJ20G, engine pull and rebuild, some questions!

Post by petterekman »

Hi there!
Been reading on these forums for quite some time, ever since I bought my -92 Subaru Legacy Turbo back in march last year.

For a while now, I've had 2 problems with my beloved Subbie:
1. Oilleak from engine onto exhaust, and
2. A valve-lifter that knocks some when the car is cold.

Now, a couple of days ago, I decided to pull the engine, and do a major rebuild, just to have it done.
So, me and 4 of my friends started tearing everything apart. Reading through these forums, I had gathered some information about the pull, and felt confident it would all work out well.

With everything in the engine bay disconnected and the intake removed, we tried to lift the engine. But it just wouldn't come out.
It does separate at the gearbox, and the two enginemounts do pop out of their holes, but the engine itself won't come. Now this is not a major problem since we didn't have a real crane (we used musclepower) and I'm sure it will come out when I get hold of a crane, but just to be sure, is there something I could have missed, that people do miss?

Now, onto my major questions:
With the engine out and in parts, what do you suggest I do? This is what I have planned: (The car has gone 270k km (170k miles))
-New gaskets
-New bearings
-Cylinders honed
-New pistonrings
-Valveseats polished

I'm also thinking about sandblasting the entire engine and the intake, so that it looks shiny and new. :)

Now, is there anything else I should think of?
Clutch? Valve "guides"? ...?

I'm also thinking about tuning it a little, now that the engine will be fresh. What are the cheapest ways of increasing the power a little?
Increase boost? How well does the original turbo work at, say, 1-1.2 bar? From what I've gathered, the engine will manage close to 1.4 bar in original condition.
Exhaust system? Is there any point in going up to, say, a 2.5" system from the cat and back?
What else? Going from the standard 200 to about 250hp would be nice.

Also, where should I buy parts from?
I live in Sweden, and I haven't found any place here in Sweden that sells the parts I need, but if there are any Swedes here, they might know?
And if I end up ordering from somewhere else, where should I order from? The states? Japan? Where do I get the best quality for the least money?

Thank you for reading this far, and hope you can help,

Petter

Nope, I'm leaving the tranny in the car, it's just the engine that I'm pulling.

No one has any ideas on rebuild, tuning or parts?

This has to be done to remove the engine. Its a pull type clutch.

There is a wealth of information on this forum. Search around for a while. I do.

Yeah, you don't have to come here and tell me to search, alright?
I have plenty of forum-experience, and I DO search, ALOT, if I'm about to post a subject.

Please, enlighten me a bit more on the subject of removing the clutch release fork pivot rod, 'cause I can't seem to find any info on it.
But also, please cut down on the attitude. It doesn't help anyone with that condescending attitude.

Everyone needs to hold on a second and realise there is no need to get upset, I am positive it was just a relative, non-hostile comment.

That aside, the clutch fork pivot rod had to be removed once you remove the 10mm hex head plug that is on the side of the tranny. If you remove the starter you can see the plug. Once the plug is removed, you thread an M6 bolt into the end of the pivot rod. Grab that and pull out the rod.

You may want to push the engine and tranny back together so the wieght of the motor isnt bearing on the rod. It makes it alot easier to pull out. Hope this helps.

It's ok. I had a feeling that you meant no harm, and neither did I.
I just felt that I had pointed out in my original post that I had done my homework, and then finding someone coming here and pointing the stick at me, well, it just didn't feel right.

Will have a look at the clutch, thanks for the tip guys!

But still, doesn't anyone have any ideas on the overhaul, tuning and parts?

Good thing this corrected itself. I was leaning towards my lock stick to end the bickering. There are search nazis here, but they are rarely that polite in their comments. What was said was NOT a search nazi comment and the OP needs to lighten up a bit. I have taken to giving the search nazis the smackdown since noone was born with a Subaru FSM downloaded to their brains...

Okay, a question for you guys:

I have been trying to remove this plug now, but it won't move, not a single bit.

I have tried:

-1/2" pneumatic wrench
-3ft pipe and socket wrench
-rust loosener
-hammer
-heating gun

...and a combination of all the above. It WON'T move.
I haven't had the guts to pull hard with the 3ft extension, because it feels like it is about to start rounding the head, and that would be horrible.

So, what can I do? Do you have any aces up your sleeves?
I can't imagine it being supposed to be stuck like this, I mean, it's just a plug, right!?
