Car's under the knife... Should I upgrade turbo now?

Car's under the knife... Should I upgrade turbo now?

Post by n2x4 »

I've gathered all my bits and pieces. I've got my 05 wrx tranny ready to go in (got flywheel back today), and I have all the exhaust off the turbo (removed uppipe to fix oil leak and DP to get room while replacing tranny).

Right now there's really not much holding the turbo in right now. Eventually, I want to upgrade to like a TD05 or a VF39, but I'm considering getting a turbo and putting it in right now.

The thing is, I haven't driven the car yet (since I got it with a bum tranny) so I don't know if I should wait and get used to the car in near stock form. I was planning on just intercooling the stock turbo and bumping up the boost a few PSI and running a FCD until I was ready for a new turbo, but now I just don't know.

Any thoughts?

I'd say go for it right now. If you want to upgrade your turbo anyways you're going to have to take all that stuff apart again. I think you could run your new turbo at lower boost until you get used to it.

I had to make a similar decision and I decided to run stock for a while so I could really get knowledge of what the car needed.

Its hard to figure out problems when they're happening to stock car, do some moding to it and it becomes even more difficult....

just my two cents

Do the turbo now.... You will regret it later...

I was going to swap turbos when I had my engine out, and decided not to for cost. Turns out my turbo is blown and I have to swap it anyway :(

If you want a vf39, I have a lead on one for $300 from a local on craigslist... If you/anyone else wants it, let me know and Ill find the link again....
