ej22t w/ ej25 phase 1 heads in a 98 Legacy. I have questions

Post by Grayguy »

Ok, here's what I'm trying to do. I want to build a hybrid turbo motor using the ej22t shortblock, and then my put my ej25 phase 1 heads and intake mani on it. I'm thinking of running a TD04 and FMIC. I'm looking into MAF Translator Pro for management.

I've been looking around the site and reading up on some things. 93forestpearl who is a member here got my into this whole 22t idea, built, and he said that you guys knew what was goign on and would definetly be able to help, so that's why I'm here. Now for the questions..

1. What head gasket do I need to run the ej25 heads on teh ej22t block w/ stock internals? I read the thead here about doing this combination, and it said the turbo Headgaskets. The problem is I have also seen sinfo saying I should be running a SOHC gasket, specifically this site: http://wac.addr.com/auto/obs/turbo/ejcalcs.html

So which Headgasket should I be running?

2. Next ? is turbo related. I am thinking of running the TD04 because they are relatively cheap and easy to find. My concerns are that with running a FMIC, I will have too much Lag, and I wont spool the turbo up until higher RPMs. Is anyone running a td04 on the ej22t? what kind of performance are they getting out of that setup, and when does it spool?

3. Injectors: I'm really not sure what I need in this department, so what would you guys suggest?

4. MAF Translator: IS anyone here running this form or management? 93forestpearl suggested I convert to MAP and use this system. Does that seem to make sense? How exactly do I convert to MAP?[/url]

fmic is really, really, really unnecessary. You need a big turbo before you should think about one of those. Although maybe the wrx ic is the biggest one you can fit in there (which is ideal with a td04).

You need the 2.5 headgaskets because otherwise they'll stick out into the bore.

Ok, so I think your right and a TMIC would be the way to go since I do have a hood scoop. It'd be cheaper and a lot less work, and i wont have to cut the car up.

So I definetly need the normal ej25 head gasket then? Ok What will my CR be with that?

So no one knows anything about the MAF Translator managment?

It would look like this, I'm not totally done the plumbing ie missing hose clamps and missing coupler on the MAF:

EJ22T
TD04
WRX TMIC
Rough P&P
96 DOHC HEADS
VOLVO HOSES
THIN SOHC GASKET
440cc INJECTORS

Going in the car later this month when I get the time off work. If the closest dyno wasn't 1000km away, I'd gladly dyno it for all to see.

So are those the 2.5 heads of the ej22t heads still? if they are the ej25 heads, do you have stock internals, how's the piston-head clearance?

Also, what kinda management are you going to run, what's it going in? Are you using the stock MAF?

ej22t shortblock, ej25dohc heads.

Ha yeah... Its the stock maf. The stock ECU is going to be very very grumpy. I think I'm gonna get my hands on an old TEC2 from electromotive to run it. I'm not going for crazy HP, I just want to make sure I can keep up with a stock wrx.

Ok, so I found a few more people with this setup, and it sounds like the Phase2 ej25 SOHC head gasket is definetly the way to go.

I'm not going for huge numbers either, hopefully a litte more than stock WRX kinda performance for now. I still can't decide if I should go TD04 or VF39...Thoughts?

Does anyone know of any reason this clutch/flywheel set up wouldn't work with my build? I'm still not sure if I want to buy a lightwheel flywheel, but I hear ACT is the way to go for my application...

just ensure that you get the correct type of clutch for your tranny.

I run the ACT streetlite setup, and I've been very impressed with it. I've launched more times than I should have and I drive like a dick all the time. it hasn't let me down yet. :)

If this is going in the Legacy Brighton in your signature, that's the wrong pressure plate for your car. That's a WRX pull style PP. You want a push style. Search for something spec'd for a my98-01 2.5RS...

Yes, this is for my Legacy GT. The site says for 98-05 RS2.5 and Legacy 2.5gt. I have a 98 LGT, so it should work.

I've got a union for the MAF/Rubber connection which has a ~1/2" barb sticking out of it, which that IAC inlet tube will be connected to.

Well its all done, in the car, and running stong - ish.

DOHC 2.5 Heads P&P
DOHC Manifold
Rails from??? with grey top injectors
EJ22T shortblock
TDO4
WRX TMIC
WRX stock BOV (plumbed to non recirc)
12PSI
Stock EJ22T management

Image

Problems:

1. Highway cruise above 70mph - the BOV starts to open under partial boost, letting out all kinds of metered air, and puffs of black smoke can be seen in rear view mirror. I guess I need to go back to recirc?

2. Idle is good if you ease down the RPMs slow, like double clutching all the way down to 1st at stoplight is fine. If you blip the throttle with the clutch in, the engine stalls.

Solutions?

1. Get a new BOV with a stiffer spring or go to recirc?

2. Maybe the BOV will fix this too, or I'm thinking of putting a 10k pot in the MAF sensor line to take some fuel out.

Oh, by the way, the car is wicked fast at 12psi. about the same or better as my friends Volvo S70 T5 5speed.

Would love to get your ideas!!!

Did you modify or cut your cruise control so that the BPV fit with the DOHC intake manifold?

No it fits, as long as you remove the large 'nipple' (NOT the vac signal) on the stock bov. You may be able to see it in the pic if you zoom in.

If you want a close pic, I'll upload in a few hours.

So leads on my BOV's poor behaviour?

Yeah, if you could that would be great. What happens as a removing the large nipple? Do you still use it or is it plugged off?

"the big nipple" cannot be blocked - or you'd have no BOV at all.
It can be removed by taking out two M6 screws, leaving an open flange.

I'm switching back to the stock recirculating valve since I can make the car run right with the WRX BOV set up to be atmosheric.

I've got some foam to seal the IC to the scoop - it looks a little strange. Just FYI.

Did you have to cut down your throttle body opening to take issue to room for the IC outlet? I know it had to be done on the stock 22T throttle body (helped do it on Phil's/BAC5.2 car).
