Project update...GT35R, new chassis etc.

Post by Innovative Tuning »

Well after I saw how well my legacy ran at 28 psi on the FP Green I decided we'd put a GT35R on it. We used an Ultimate Racing kit and reworked the downpipe, intake, and charge pipe to fit the Legacy SS engine and chassis.

I used modded STi injectors with NA rails and no other fuel mods besides the in tank walbro. This was made possible by running meth injection.

Still no intercooler. Intake temps are in check as are EGT's. During tuning at 23 psi on the 35R I blew a tranny when boost hit. This was the second day the 35r was in the car. After the first day the doors weren't lining up and the car creaked constantly just going doing the road. I had enough with the floppy chassis and extra weight so I decided it was time to move this party into another chassis.

This may be hard for some of you to hear, but I put everything in an Impreza chassis. :) It's a 2 door coupe. We finally tore into it (was bone stock) last Monday night and by Friday morning we had this:
Image

This should give you a basic idea of what we mixed and matched:
Legacy SS front subframe and hubs, impreza rear subframe and hubs.
Legacy SS stock longblock, TB, and manifolds
WRX trans with RA gears, WRX rear end and axles
Legacy SS front and rear brakes
STi rear sway with kartboy WRX rear endlinks using legacy SS mounts.
DMS coilovers from my legacy SS rally car
4 point cage (so far...we intend on 10) with harnesses and Sparcos

Autronic SM4 standalone with AIM digital dash, stock gas gauge, Defi BF Amber EGT, Innovate wideband.

I autoX'd it for testing Saturday and according to the other guys from my shop people were asking what was wrong with the car when they saw all the white smoke...then they realized it was tire smoke. It was smoking all 4 tires on the straights. Kinda novel but not great for performance. UPS screwed up and my wheel spacers didn't show up so I had to run 205 wide Azenis instead of the 245's on 16X8 wheels that I had ready to go.

Then I took 4 drag passes and finally spun a bearing on this engine. After not sleeping for 3 days to get the car done we made the mistake of throwing 20w50 in it and it was pushing past seals and creating dangerously high oil pressure which eventually killed the engine. Not to mention I was banging limiter at 7600 rpm all day on a 15 year old stock engine I've been wailing on for the last year. :) Unfortunately we didn't have time to bleed the clutch so it was sticking to the floor on every shift and I had to pick it up with my toes before going in the next gear. Also we didn't have time to wire the clutch switch or VSS so I didn't have launch control or flat shifting and I couldn't get the car out of the hole so the results were poor, but again we just wanted to get the new car out and test it. I was picking up 25 mph on the back eighth despite letting off a couple seconds before the line as I hit the rev limiter in 4th.

We have a lot to do over the next month to get the car done right before we bring it out, mainly things we just didn't have time to get to before this first test. It looks like I'm putting an STi engine and tranny (for the active diff and front LSD) in so more of the legacy parts are coming out, but my new daily driver is all legacy. 93 legacy SS with 98 legacy GT leather interior, all black matching the black dash etc.

If anyone wants a WRX transmission with one day's use on a new RA Gearset, synchros, new bearings and 3/4 and 5th forks that also has low mileage on the rest of the box, diffs, etc. let me know. I've never had one we've sold break. Much like engines, I think it comes down to the builder more than the parts used.

I'd call it solid preliminary test :). I would like to see some videos of you smoking all 4 tires at once. What do you suspect your WHP is these days?

It's a shame to see you transplant all your work into an Impreza but do what you gotta do :). I'm anxious to see where your adventures in power take you now that you have a more rigid frame.

Bummer that its not in a Legacy anymore. Hard to blame you, but it still stinks.

How much for the box?

Yup. It's a shop car. You beat the crap out of it and figure out what works, what doesn't, and the limits of each part. That way customers get something that's proven rather than being a guinea pig.

I knew some of you would be upset that it's in an impreza, but I'm sure you understand. We're talking about 400 pounds here.

The runs were awful. My best 60' was a 2.0 without the 2 step. I launched at 7000 rpm and still bogged. The front 1/8th was super slow (8's) because of the bogging and the clutch sticking to the floor on every shift. The power was there though. I was picking up 25-26 miles an hour on the back 1/8th even though I let off around the 1000' mark when I hit limiter in 4th. Racing into 5th is something I'll have to break my mental barrier against and I didn't see a point because of the clutch issue. By the time I got the clutch up to hit the gas again I'd basically be at the line.

I'll take 2700 for the complete RA geared box complete with the sensors, harnesses, etc. on it. About 15k miles on the stock WRX case, diffs, and under 100 miles on the RA set, synchros, bearings, 3/4 and 5th forks, etc. I was real easy on the shifting since there was no point in shifting fast when I had to wait to get the clutch up. LOL

OK someone got more pics. This is the finish straight for those who were calling BS in their heads when I said it smoked all 4 tires when I hit full boost. :)

doesnt bother me that you swapped shells.

i am at a similar point with my legacy as far as the shell goes. mine is pretty rusty and the old impreza wagons are looking really atractive.

It's been a while but I just looked at the logs...I hit 40 psi of boost on the run that killed it. :)

The rest of the day it was around 30 psi.

I'm putting an STi engine and trans. in so I haven't been updating this. I still drive my other legacy SS daily. :)

Yup. It took a lot of hard work and dedication but I finally killed it. It probably would have lasted a long time at 30psi which blows my mind. Just think what it could take with forged pistons/rods.

We've been running the new setup for a few weeks now. It went 11.4 at 121 mph on low boost with no intercooler. Since then I have the engine pretty well broken in, we've put an intercooler on. The rear diff blew and we put sti rear diff, axles, hubs/knuckles, and brakes on it.

Here's a video from our first road course test session which was yesterday (in the rain):

I can't wait to do my full custom turbo setup in the spring once I have some money socked away for the last bit of extras I need. Watching the video makes me all excited to have the car pulling some crazy fast runs on a track somewhere. Of course I'll settle with blowing the minds of the locals who think their "tuned" Civic or Eclipse is top stuff.

Not sure how quick the Civics are in your neck of the woods, but some (like 03%) are actually quick (12's or better).

That still leaves plenty to beat-up on but the occasional 1 may smoke ya.

There is a Red '92 body Civic Hatch that drives to Englishtown Raceway Park, bolts on a set of slicks & runs 10.0's with a 9.99's mixed in every now & then.
I saw this happen at least 4 Fridays & every time I saw that thing run I was like Dammmm.

I also said Dammm when I saw the vid clip of the Innovative Tuning Impreza passing a 350Z on a roadcourse - the turbo sounds like a tornado - Dammm...

Agreed, you will run into some nicely put together cars every now & then. Doesn't hurt that our local tech college has an excellent automotive program and tends to draw in either V8 tuner or 4 cyl tuners. Most of them tend to drive correctly "tuned" vehicles since that's their passion.

Trust me, I've seen some "rice" vehicles, but then there are quite a few I think would give a decently upgraded WRX a run for it's money.

We upgraded the ignition system and I have the boost at 28-29psi so far. It looks like scattered showers the rest of the week but hopefully I'll get to run it at the strip soon just to see what it does.

No good times yet. Once I turned the boost up I went to the track on street tires and it spun all the way down the track as shown here:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ci_3IY_YN0c

It also wheel hopped like crazy in first gear whether I launched hard or bogged and rolled it out. Once it got moving it went right into wheel hop.

Then I got Hoosier DOT tires and blew upgraded axles as soon as the car moved so I haven't made a pass on them. I'm hoping to have my DSS stage 5 kit tomorrow. If all goes well I'll run it at the track Friday.
