Alpine Type R Speakers

Post by smh0101 »

My uncle got in a car wreck and has all of his audio stuff minus 1 amp and the headunit.

He had Alpine Type R 6 1/2 in speakers. Will these fit or will I need to do some fabrication.

How much gain will I get over stock speakers with these speakers and a WRX headunit? Do I need the amp and tweeters to?

Most aftermarket speakers wont sound good unless you feed them some power (read - use an amp).

I have no experience with any of the stock subaru headunits, but most stock headunits suck....

If you dont really care and just want half decent sound, buy a small amp and install the speakers with the small amp and wrx headunit.

If you want it to sound good, buy a decent headunit and a decent amp.... FYI, you cannot go wrong with most of the soundstream line of amps.

The alpine speakers you have are between low and mid fi. (They arent great, but if you arent entering any shows, they should do fine).

Some other advice - buy from an authorized reseller (so you get a warranty), but stay away from local shops - they are total ripoffs....

The main problem with buying a good headunit is since my car is going to be parked in a college parking lot coming this Sept I dont really want the car to be a bullseye for theives.

Do ya think its possible to get decent sound out of the rex unit with a good amp?

Stock Subaru decks have been Clarion-made since at least the first Legacy. The only exceptions to this that I know of, at least stateside, is the McIntosh units in the high-end Outbacks of the early part of this millennium.

I have a set of Type Rs in the rear, and RF's in the front with KEF tweeters in the stock A-pillar locations. With the stock deck (cass, cd & 6-disc), an old JBL GTS50 amp, and the OE underseat sub, the sound is at least respectable. I have no worries whatsoever about it getting stolen.

I'll think the Amp to. The only problem with that is its friggin huge and I guess I'll just have to learn how to wire the whole thing. He had an awesome setup until it got wrecked ( it was a Toyota Tundra). Originally he had 2 giant amps. but when it was at the yard it was brocken into and they took an amp and the headunit.

How much room is there to work with? What is the maximum depth for the speakers to fit?

Non US Market decks are made by Kenwood, and newer decks are either Clarion or Panasonic.

Okay so it is official.
I am getting 4 speakers and the amp.
The speakers are the Alpine Type R's and the amp is an Infinity.
All for $100 bucks.
When he put it in 6 months ago he spent about $2600 for hardware and instalation labor. So subtract the labor and he prolly spent about $1300 for the hardware. That is including the headunit and the other stolen amp so subtract 360 for the amp and prolly 200 for the headunit so that it about $700 bucks worth of hardware (when it was new!) for $100. Sounds like a helluva deal to me!

I am going to set it up with the WRX headunit.
If this isn t good enough I might consider changing headunits but most likely I will keep it.

This weekend I am going to install the rear speakers and amp and run all the wire for the front and then once my Crutchfield Speaker adaptor bracket arrives I will install the fronts. so that should be next week.

I'll try and get some pics of the install.

And in another month, I'll be putting in dynamat (or an offbrand dynamat competitor).

Then hopefully wheels and edm headlights :D

So tonight I installed the rear speakers. But not the amp.
I havfe the amp. It is an Infinity Reference 7541a. It is a good amp but one problem is that I dont want to put to much strain on the alternator and prematurly kill it if I'm not careful.

So I decided to install the speakers with out the amp and so far so good.
The rears where a pain in the ass to install cuz even though they were 6 1/2 in speakers they were deep and thick so they wouldnt just drop in to the hole.

To fix that I used a pipe wrench, a hammer, a drill, and one of those adjustable wrenches ( mind fart: I cant think of what they are called)

So I bent down the metal in the way, drilled new holes and put them together. They sound way better than stock.

Tommarrow I am going to see if I can install the fronts without the brackets. If so then cool but if not, damn I guess I'll spit out the 30 bucks for the adaptor plate.

Another thing is the tweeters. I dont know where to put these and the crossovers.

Any suggestions on the amp: is the radioshack guy full of it or could I really screw up the alternator?

And an suggestions on the tweeters?

I'll post pics of the install later
