DIY front LSD

we are building up our FWD rallycrosser.

we are considering front LSD options.

1. Weld it.
2. Phantom Grip.
3. kaaz, cusco etc.
4. spring from a ford locker rear end.

option one is the cheapest and three is the most expensive. two will eventually wear out and has been known to not work perfect. 4 is something i just learned about and need to do more research.

You already have AWD, I think you're becoming a traction whore!

I vote for not welding the front diff, that would be pretty rough on stuff. I haven't heard about the spring thing you mentioned.

Steering a car with a locked front diff would be such a whore

it is really only an issue at parkinglot speeds.

in a rallycross or stage rally it isnt as much of an issue.

here is where i learned about using the sprig to make a cheap LSD:

http://forums.neons.org/viewtopic.php?t ... sc&start=0

they learned about it here:

http://www.turbododge.com/forums/f4/f22 ... -copy.html

it is basically a phantom grip w/out the blocks and only costs about 20 dollars rather than 250.

The spring sounds cool.

It won't let me register on that site. Can someone register and PM Ghost Neon asking him to take a measurement of the space available for the spring?

I might be willing to give this a shot and remove my front diff to install it. Maybe. I'm nervous about longevity and the last thing I want is a blown front diff.

So can anyone register and PM that guy? If I could get a measurement, I could see if it's even a possibility for our front diffs. If it is, I might be willing to try it.

I also want to know which dealer he's getting them from, and which part number he recommends.

Oh, and I want bolt spacing details on the diff-pin retainer tabs. That just sounds like a good idea. If your punching out the diff pin, every bit helps.

I looked at a front diff today. Definitely not enough room to insert a spring. Sorry :(.

Just a thought, has anyone tried moving a rear 91 LSD diff into the front case? Are there any reasons this wouldnt work?

the front diff is larger than the rear diff. I was wondering if it was bigger as in the size of a 180 rear diff?
dunno

if it was, I could build the PIMPEST Dtrain with my RA dccd 5mt and the 2 r180 diffs I could get (ones already mine, others a buddys)

the reason it wont work is because the diff are completly different units that work in different ways. One of the techs here tried, and found that there is no possible way to do it without creating a custom pumpkin.
