Codes 24 and 35
Hi,
My 1990 Legacy L+ sedan is sending out ECU codes 24 and 35. Does anyone
know how to fix them?
Also, I noticed that the Haynes manual says nothing about ECU codes. Has
anyone bought the factory service manuals? Are they helpful? Are they
worth the high price?
Thanks
John

Codes 24 and 35
Code 24 = Idle Air Control Valve. Should probably replace with a
new, or used part. Not really repairable.
Code 35 = Canister Purge Solenoid Valve. Another part that should be
replaced with a new or used part. Not repairable.
Check this handy page, at the bottom, for the codes:

Thanks to Josh for the info, guess i should steal it and put it on my
site. Maybe then, people can read it

Do you guys happen to know where these components are located or what
they look like? Does the haynes manual say? I haven't had a chance
to check.
Thanks!

The CPC Valve is underneath the front right ("left" if looking at the engine
from the front of the car) intake runner (I forget the cylinder number). It
took me about 20 minutes to replace on my Legacy. But, I have a set of
"gear-wrenches" which look like a regular combination wrench, except the box
end actually ratchets. Without these, the job will take much longer. Why?
The bolt securing the CPC valve is under the valve, is very long, and faces
the back of the engine. There is no way to use a socket. You have to slip
a combination wrench down between the intake runners to get to the bolt.
With very little room to turn the wrench (maybe 15 degrees rotation at a
time), I image it would take a very long time to remove the bolt with a
regular combination wrench. With a gear-wrench (I believe the bolt is
12mm), I had the bolt out in a couple of minutes.
The most time consuming task was trying to disconnect the electrical plug.
The wiring was wrapped around some steel vacuum lines under the manifold, so
I couldn't get the plug all the way out from under the manifold. I had to
use a tiny screwdriver to release the catch on the plug. I unwrapped the
wires after that so it wont be such a pain in the future.
I'd like to hear if anybody has an easier way to do this.
I've not had to deal with the other part. (yet...

John, I had the same problem with the same car about 2 years ago. Before you
buy a purge selonoid, check the bottom of your purge canister. The nipple for
the hose clips into the canister and can easily be dislodged. This usually
will throw a code. Good luck, BillC.

What's the chance of them being able to get factory manuals for Japanese models such as 97 GTB... and in English?
Too much to ask I guess....

Subject: [BC-BFLegacyWorks] Codes 24 and 35
Hi,
My 1990 Legacy L+ sedan is sending out ECU codes 24 and 35. Does anyone
know how to fix them?
Also, I noticed that the Haynes manual says nothing about ECU codes. Has
anyone bought the factory service manuals? Are they helpful? Are they
worth the high price?
Thanks
John

I paid ~ $100 to subaruparts.com for the factory manuals and they are worth every penny thus far.

Codes 24 and 35
They have them. Check it out www.subaruparts.com
The dealership that owns that internet site is just south of where I live (Tacoma, WA).
However the manual you purchase *may* cover a number of different models for a given year. Ultimately all the models use the same frame and in most cases the drivetrain as well. The details that make up your particular model are just "bolt-on"s of a sort and the manual will contain all of them. For example, my manuals, cover the L, LS, and LSi models for years '91 - '93.

What's the chance of them being able to get factory manuals for Japanese models such as 97 GTB... and in English?
Too much to ask I guess....
