Fun with a 5.7L GTO/ other muscle

Post by farfrumwork »

So I had some fun on my lunch with a 5.7L GTO. It was piloted by a woman (looked like a midlife crisis vehicle). She was goosing it at all the lights as I followed her through some slow areas (plotting my attack - haha).

So anyway we came to a light at a "T", both of us turning left. She gave it off the line and I followed suit.
I was on her like stink on shit! I thought she'd pull away hard, as we went up to about 85mph, but I actually pulled a slight amount 40-60mph (2nd gear) then it was even up to both of us lifting.

And yes she was racing with me. How well I can only imagine - but still, it's got 5.7L :-D (big or not, over 5500ft of altitude kills NA power)

Also related - I played with a friend at work on the same portion of road last week - he pulled me once I got in 3rd, but I held on his rear pretty well up to 60mph - He's got a convertible Cobra (I was REALLY happy with how I faired against him).

I love the look on these muscle-folks faces when a 14-15yr old Subaru is NOT dropping into the distance in their rear view 8)

Next week is the last test and tune at our local track - I'm trying my best to make it out.

ya i love it too. i was messing around on airport way and got my self into a street race with a newer mustang GT. we both take off at the light and i pull 1 1/2 cars from the hole. then i pulled about one more car and that was it.

we get to the next light. and he asks me if im turbo'd and i say yes but stock turbo. he even said my car sounds very nice. now you never hear a domestic hotrodder say somthing like that about a 4 cylinder.

Yeah, Jack who owns the Cobra I was playing with said "That thing Really moves!" after our little encounter. We talk cars at work, and he was skeptical of what kind of power I said my car makes, but now he knows :)

There are some super cool people in the muscle car scene.

The tuner crowd I've seen isn't any better. Ever been to a NOPI show? Very disappointed. Everyone had to be "cooler" than everyone else.

and the import vs. domestic battle remains as pointless as ever...
they both have their strong points and weak points. what one can do easily, generally the other cannot. it is the elitist assholes who claim that one is better than the other.

Most car people of any kind are douchebags or clueless wannabes. I find people who like the weird shit are the most well-rounded as far as what they like. Of course, that would make sense because their cars aren't status symbols, popular, or easy to live with and they have to do most of the work themselves. Liking the orphans probably stems from a large base of automotive knowledge to begine with.

ya i like my car because not everyone has one. you dont see it all over the place decked out with crap all over it. i like to be unique and go my own rout. there for i drive a car that you have to make everything your self or be very innovative about newer car parts.

sorry to start the fire about the hot rodder thing. ive just never heard a mustang driver say that about in import.

As far as that goes, most 4 cylinders DO sound like shit and they're almost all inlines. A problem that's exacerbated by all the crooked-hatters with the loud fart cans that wake up a neighborhood as they full throttle accelerate to 60 in 10 secs. The flat four with a decent exhaust sounds more like a V8 than an I4.

haha crooked-hatters

I completely agree on the weird is better philosophy. I make good money, but I love my '93 "grampa mobile", as my wife calls it. No one suspects it, it's cheap, I know it well (and like to work on it), and it's fast.

My whole stable is full of rarities: '93 T-Leg, '90 AWD civic wagon, '85 Westy Weekender, '75 CB550, '00 W650. And they are all modified in one way or another  with more to come!

yep, the "new" W650 (only made for a couple years here in the states). They are modeled after a T120 Triumph (or BSA of the same era). I put lower bars and a Corbin gunfighter saddle on it - looks TITS!!

It's my wife's bike (and nicer/slightly faster than my CB550, which is fine - I like the mechanical nature of the '75 more).

Ain't that the truth. The reason everybody hates on the people with Japanese cars is that most of them just put a fart can on the back and that automatically makes their car "faster" and "cooler." I find this funny because most times I hear loud cars, it's a Honda civic with some ugly-ass body kit covered in primer or something slow like that. The funny part is that while they drive away loudly , I know that I could smoke them without even trying.

When I had to work at Pep Boys briefly, there was a guy there with a 93 or so Accord with a CAI and some kind of exhaust I think. I drove home from work the way I drive anywhere and he was asking me the next day what I did to my car to make it so fast! Fast? I'm running a low compression turbo engine without the turbo and I never even knew he was behind me trying to keep up. I think he went somewhere to cry for a while.
