Question for the Diehard subaru loyalists

Post by greg donovan »

What other make and model would you buy besides a Subaru?

i really only want to own and drive Subarus.

i also usually only buy used cars.

if i were to buy something else for my personal use it would be an old 70s Ford capri or try to import an old Ford Escort from the UK.

Image

Image

for a family car it would probably be an older honda odysee minivan.

If I had to choose between my two cars i would pick the legacy but if I am honest with myself it is because I live in a place where winter lasts for 6 months.

I also own a 1990 BMW 525 and I love it. It offers things that no sporty Subaru can. I really enjoy getting into my Bimmer instead of my Subaru when I am in a suit and going to a wedding. If your date is in a dress and looking fine, much nicer to open her door if it's a BMW. Even just cruising around the city and going to work feels better.
Of course, the image/comfort thing is icing on the cake. I love driving it. I have a 6 cyclinder  AUTO  , and I love driving it. I can only imagine that having an M really is close to the ultimate driving experience......

Although yes I suppose if ANYTHING else an Esprit or a Diablo or something.... my instinct was just to keep it realistic (Jamal)

My family had a 1600 Capri until I was 3. I think my love for small light cars comes from that. I still remember it - manual transmission, light blue with black interior.

I'd have the car I'm building and another cheap car like my 3 for a daily.

If I were to collect cars, I'd only allow myself a few at a time, so the rotation would include: Citroen SM, Volvo 1800ES, Volvo 240 LS6 swap, Saab Sonnet III, TVR 2500M, Alfa Romeo Giulia, Lancia Scorpion, Lancia Fulvia, Maserati Khamsin, '69 Charger 440, Buick Grand National, '66 Shelby GT-350, '55 Chevy 210 4-door stock, Samarai replica Datsun 240Z with an LS6, and some other wierdos I haven't thought of that aren't Subarus. None of them but the Charger and GN would be automatics.

Fords are FTL, but you'd have an Audi? Some of the cars I listed may be nightmares too, but they aren't dailies.

I have never been in an S8 but the RS series made quite an impression on me.

I am a valet so I park a lot of stuff and every once in a while I get a sweet one. I have parked a Flying Spur, 911 Turbo, Gallardo, F430 (I got this one a little loose ;)) but when I parked an RS4 I was blown away.

I think it is b/c I didn't have huge expectations from it but as soon as I got in, it reminded me of the Bentley and when I punched it going up the long ramp to the parkade it reminded me of the Ferrari.

All this for a fraction of the cost.

My point: Audis are sweet.

They're overweight, crank-walking, and direct competitors to the cars we love so much on this board. But I still want a 91 Galant VR4. I almost... ALMOST... had one for my first car. That car popped my turbo cherry, the first turbo car I ever drove.

As much as I hate VW, I'd still do a Corrado VR6. The best-looking VW IMO, and one of the best handling FWD cars ever.

E46 M3? Hell no. E30 M3? Hell yes.

Mazda Lantis. I don't know why. It just looks like a cool car to me... Pic

Definitely a Lancia Delta and Stratos, although I wouldn't do any serious driving with the Stratos until I had more performance driving schooling.

Definitely a Grand National. Rode in one with a T76 turbo, it's still to this day the fastest car I've ever been in.

And while we're dreaming, I would gladly castrate myself with a rusty Exacto knife for a McLaren F1. More expensive and faster supercars have been built, but not better ones.

Speaking of Toyotas - forgot to mention the most beautiful Japanese car of all time - the 2000GT. That and the Maserati are the only two I'd stump up the money for (the Maserati isn't too much yet, but they will be). I've read the 2000GT was an E-Type hack, but I've seen one and it's infintely more beautiful than the overrated Jag (and smaller) with better proportions, curvature, and wheel stance. I will give the nod to the E-Type on the taillights, but I never liked the phallic nose - an abomination after the gorgeous, female-like XKSS.

Celica GT4! Yeah, I'd like one of those. I do also like audis and BMWs, as was said here before. Lotus would be nice, but not for a daily driver.
Any of the Mseries, or the first gen X5 would be ideal, or the new 6 coupe. I'm sure there's some other european cars I'd like, but I don't have time to list them.
Although, if I put the time, money and effort into my legacy, I'd be able to make it something I can appreciate on all kinds of levels, so I'm apt to stick with it. . .

what? okay, i might want something different if i had unlimited resources, but within a reasonable budget, those would be the two to go for imo...

Oh I'd definitely do a Typhoon or Syclone too. Faster than the NSX when they came out.

Oh, and Steve reminded me. I'd take a Volvo 850R in a heartbeat. It's endearing really, but a TON of Volvos are getting attention around here lately, and I'm glad, because I think they're great cars (at least the pre-Ford ones anyways) that have a lot of potential. And ALL The Volvo guys I talk to are cool as hell. No douches.

Good list, volvos and NSXs! I agree, the pre-ford volvos do kick ass. Good bodylines, decent power, and not too bad of a pricetag, either.

I've already got the Vanagon, so I'd have to go with a classic VW powered by a Subaru motor.

My future garage:

1967 Karmann Ghia convertible with a WRX motor, Porsche 5spd transmission

1973 VW Thing

E36 M3 convertible Euro Spec

Vanagon Syncro with Subaru Diesel Boxer

And, of course, my '91 SS for daily use!

By the way, here's some pics of a couple Volvos that show up at the UCF car meet. The S70 sedan is owned by a guy named Jesús, and it's funny because he actually looks like Jesus  The biggest 'mod' he has is the stock S70 wheels, but I think the car looks ridiculously hot as it is. His buddy has the 850 wagon.

You don't see many Corrados, because they're typical VW nightmares and even getting parts sucked. And that was years ago when they were still fairly new. Too bad as they were cool looking cars. A friend of mine had one and they handled well, too. Probably the only VW I've ever been impressed by the handling. Didn't drive it, though. I really liked the early Sciroccos.

I would like more Beetles...and I intend to purchase a 911SC or early Carrera when I get out of school...

And I promised myself by the time I'm 30 that I will have a Porsche 930 (that would be a 911 Turbo)

And I'd really like a Twin Turbo S4...

And also hoard a bunch of Legacy Turbos... :D

It's kinda like a Ferrari symbol. I can't remember off the top of my head if the horse looks the same or there's something different about it. Nevertheless, it says Volvo on it, not Ferrari :)

Before I was diehard Subaru, I was (and still am really) diehard Import. I'll never willingly own another American car, with a few exceptions:

Buick Grand National
94-96 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP (the old ones, pre SC, with the 3.4 DOHC)

Realistically, I'd have a Lexus SC300, mid 90's Camry coupe, 90-96 300ZX, or 97-98 240SX
